Photographer's Note

The Pah-O are the second most numerous ethnic group in Shan State after the Inthas. Also known as the Taungthu people, they live in the southwest of Shan State from the slopes of mountains near Kalaw up to Thaton region at the foothills of the Bago Yoma ranges.

They are mostly engaged in agriculture, cultivating their staple cash crops which includes the 'thanapet trees', the leaves of which are used for wrapping tobacco and other herbs to make most of the country’s cheroots.
