(alternate shot in WS)
Well, Buddhist propriety goes belly up, with these dirty little feet at head level, ouh lala!
Sometimes, people wonder about temple duties and discipline , but these little "Shan-apans" (french pun) are just telling us: "we are not monks, we are kids first!"...
proverb/title translation: You can't judge a monk by his garb.

What a funny pic !!! Congratulations for this moment you caught !!!
ngythanh (8538) 2004-12-11 11:53
This photo should be on the newspaper, or magazine. You've got the moment when they have "been kids first".
Thanks for sharing. A copy went to my favorites.
jboj (251) 2004-12-11 12:13

Joy of life! Thanks Herve.
KevinRL (835) 2004-12-11 15:20
Well done again Herve.
One little niggle, is there any more of the photo available on the left, the boys robe has just been cropped a bit too close for my likings.
sengir (4956) 2004-12-11 15:22
wow! That's truly a great shot, very funny ;), and something new to add to the typical "kid-monks" photos
flydragon (0) 2004-12-11 18:43
une tres belle photo
et tellement attachante
j'aime bcp leurs expressions
j'aime aussi ce changement
d'attitude, de voir de jeunes
monks délirés, nous rapprochent
michel_r (1118) 2004-12-11 19:03
Karthik (306) 2004-12-12 3:19
wow, excellent capture! I love the beautiful smiles on their faces. gr8 work Herve!
scalerman (26900) 2004-12-12 19:18
maybe monk-scouts... most young men are expected to give up at least a year in a monastery in most SE Asian countries... nice, emotional capture.
maciekda (19861) 2004-12-13 10:55

Hahaha! I love the expression of the kids' faces - so happy, so worry-free! And that kid turned upside-down is really funny! I remember when I was a kid, I used to shout and scream like them :) Your notes are wonderful and funny as well! Very good daily life photo! rgds.

You have a great collection of portraits Herve, but this one stood out the most for me and brought a smile to my face.
Youve chosen a great angle and captured the joy in their faces perfectly.

maurazos (0) 2005-01-26 10:26
Strange but nice and attractive composition, and of course, a bit rebel for the fact of showing the monk's feet, the forbidden part of the body in most of South-East Asian cultures. Good reflexion. Regards.
eflowers (674) 2005-02-08 11:31
The movement you've captured in this photo is amazing! I love the swirling colorful robes.

Bravo

This is a fantastic shot. Great moment to catch and a funny one too.... hilarious actually, especially the up side down kid. The expressions are priceless, so is the whole picture even though it may lacks some quality (little grainy).
thanks for sharing -

Rinie_Hoff (9340) 2005-04-03 16:05
Wow, wow, wow, Herve, what a fun, and what a pleasure, it's all radiating from the screen, they're having so much fun!.
Nice PoV, herve, it's a marvellous pic!
kevinos (7379) 2005-04-08 2:50
What a wonderful picture! It captures so well one of those fleeting spontaneous moments. Actually they are not monks. A man cannot be ordained a monk until he has reached 20 years. These are novices ( samanera) who join the temple either to get an education or because the have no family. The have only 10 rules,( monks have 136) and do not have many temple duties and are allowed to be pretty normal kids. Most never go on to be ordained. It's largely part of the social structure.
leschamb (371) 2005-04-10 4:42
Wow, what a capture.
Photographing kid like this is difficult, since they all come charging at you, making focus, and getting all the faces in, very difficult.
I love the colors, and I love the upsidedown kid. It's great

The first thing I noticed about this even in thumbnail was that these buddhist kids were throwing their feet up at you. How incredibly unusual. A really delightful moment and image. well done.
xhanuman (558) 2005-10-05 23:24
This captures the spirit that lives in Myanmar... even among the adults that are aware of their 'plight'... they still find things to smile about in their daily lives.
yeah (213) 2005-10-15 6:39
Hi Herve, I smiply like this picture very very much. Very lifely and amusing. Well these are the kids in Myanmar. You made me remembering my stays as a novice in a monastery for the fist time. I was only 8. Well Done!
germanito (495) 2005-10-16 13:51
starbug (6924) 2005-10-20 6:56
What an excellent, shot, there's so muuch life and energy here, so much simplicity and happiness!Wonderful colours, great point of view! And great catch of the problem- they are just kids, even though dressed in monks' clothes...

jeffchaill (445) 2011-03-18 6:27
