Intha fisherman in sunrise mist, a photo from Shan, North

Photographer's Note

Le lac Inle s'étend sur 22 km de long et 11 de large, à 875 m d'altitude. On y rencontre des pêcheurs Intha, habitants des 17 villages contruits sur pilotis. Ils sont réputés pour faire avancer leurs bateaux à fond plat en se tenant debout sur une jambe, l'autre enserrant une pagaie, ainsi ils ont les mains libres pour utiliser les nasses qu'ils enfoncent lentement sous l'eau transparente et peu profonde à l'endroit où ils ont repéré le poisson. Puis à l'aide d'un genre de trident ils piquent dans la nasse afin de faire remonter le poisson qui se trouve pris au piège.

The people of Inle Lake (called Intha), some 70,000 of them, live in four cities bordering the lake, in numerous small villages along the lake's shores, and on the lake itself.
Most transportation on the lake is traditionally by small boats, or by somewhat larger boats fitted with outboard motors. Local fishermen are known for practicing a distinctive rowing style which involves standing at the stern on one leg and wrapping the other leg around the oar. This unique style evolved for the reason that the lake is covered by reeds and floating plants making it difficult to see above them while sitting. Standing provides the rower with a view beyond the reeds. However, the leg rowing style is only practiced by the men. Women row in the customary style, using the oar with their hands, sitting cross legged at the stern.

Hello Patrick,

You're capturing well this daily scene by a good composition and excellent tone/clarity, so it's interesting and impressive to see the fisherman rowing the boat in the mist. He is rowing the boat by unique style as you explain, and it's interesting in big fishing net on boat, too. The focus is well correct in a fisherman and the whole is harmonized beautifully by soft/gentle tones.

Hi Patrick, Isn't this way of fishing amazing? I would be in water instantly trying to row like this. But also there women just sit in the boats. Nice shot, I like this low lying mist over the water. pleasant dreaming atmosphere.
We visited the same places but in different times.

there is a lovely sense of balance to this picture, reflecting the stance of the fisherman balancing between the boat and the pole. the mist just above the surface of the water combined with the sunlight have produced a fantastic effect and a very moody and atmospheric scene.

on ne se lasse pas de ces photos de ce lac. Superbe ambiance. La lumière est top et le cadrage bien équilibré. la petite brume est la cerise sur le gâteau. Allez je pinaille un peu: dommage pour le visage trop dans l'ombre mais je pinaille hein....faut bien un peu de temps en temps;-)

Un petit tour de bateau-pétarade pour découvrir ces fabuleux pêcheurs.

Le moment choisi est absolument fascinant, avec cette vapeur à la surface de l'eau qui rajoute une dimension énigmatique à la scène. En plus du sens esthétique, on sent le calme qui règne et l'ambiance est réussie.

J'aime bien la pose du pêcheur et la lumière qui souligne sa silhouette.

the composition matches exquisitely the elegant balance of the fisherman standing on the edge of his boat. The picture has wonderful depth and the mist over the lake and the distant shore makes a suggestive and captivating effect. Your lighting is masterful and I don't think it matters that we don't have a clear view of the fisherman's face; it's his elegant figure hovering between sky and lake that makes the main focal point. I also like very much the chromatic harmony supported even by the fisherman's clothes. Congratulations and thank you!

This is almost a trademark of Inle Lake, the famous one legged Intha canoe rower, caught at the right time of the day where the soft tones and misty diffuse background create such a wonderful impact. This is further enhanced by an excellent backlighting effect. Placement is perfect, great clarity and color rendition. Another of your quality shot, Congrats.
