Maymyo or May's Town (now known as Pyin U Lwin) was established into a British hill station in 1896 to escape the stifling summer heat of the lowland and it became a stronghold of British influence in central Burma. Located about 70km away from Mandalay on a plateau over 1,200m above sea level in Shan State, Maymyo is delightfully cool and pleasant with fresh clean air the whole year round even at the height of summer and at certain times of the year it can get very chilly.

This very English town is well known for its colonial architecture with large compound and pine trees, eucalyptus and silver-oak abound in town. It is like a trip back in time! The town, was named after Major General James May of the 5th Bengal Infantry stationed here in 1886.

Today, Maymyo still has one of the larger populations of Anglo-Burmese in the country.
