Photographer's Note

Le Tanaka est un petit arbre qui produit une écorce dure et mince. On obtient une pâte en frottant l’écorce de la bûche sur une pierre plate en y ajoutant quelques gouttes d’eau. Cette pâte est appliquée principalement sur le visage.
Les femmes ,les enfants (parfois quelques hommes !) s’en enduisent les joues, le front et le nez. Lorsqu’elles veulent en faire un maquillage de fêtes, elles y font des volutes, l’aide d’une brosse à dent ou d’un peigne, véritables dessins artistiques.
Le tanaka les protège aussi contre le soleil.
On trouve aujourd’hui des formes de tanaka prêtes à l’emploi,ce qui doit être le cas pour cette petite fille.

The tanaka is a small tree which produces a hard and thin bark. We obtain a dough by rubbing the bark of the log on a flat stone by adding it some drops of water. This dough is mainly applied to the face.
The women, the children (sometimes some men!)cover with it their cheeks, their forehead and nose. When they want to make a make-up of parties, they make it volutes,with the help of a toothbrush or a comb, real artistic drawings.
The tanaka also protects them against the sun..
Today, we find forms of tanaka ready for use ,what is certainly the case for this little girl.

Hi Pascale,
This little flower is very sweet. I just love the painted leaf decorations using the traditional tanaka. A lovely clear studio like portrait, that fills your frame so well.

Qu'est-ce qu'elle est mignonne! Tu as fait un superbe portrait de cette craquante petite fille parée pour la fête. Elle est tellement concentrée sur ton appareil qu'elle en louche un peu! Bravo pour la réalisation technique impeccable de cette excellente photo.

So cute! I like the triple leaf designed tanaka patterns. The purple flowers are a nice bonus. Good sharpness & shadow detail with a soft diffused light. The neutral white bg adds graphism. C'est superb!

How cute!, Very decorative use of thanaka, I;ve seen this idea often mostly around the main tourists areas in the hope that a photo would be taken and money given.
The background works really well to set her in the best light.

C'est trop mignon et craquant, je l'adore celle-ci. Elle a un regard intimidé presqu'un peu triste qui plonge directement en nous. je trouve que la qualité de la photo est aussi au top aussi bien au niveau de la lumière et de la netteté mais tout en douceur. On dirait une photo de studio. Bravo.

On ne voit que le portrait magnifique, sans indices visuels sur le contexte. L'expression est bien capturée. La lumière, les couleurs, les détails sont excellents. Bravo.

Hi pascale. The photo is beautiful and reminds me of my visit to Myanmar several years ago. Tanaka is a traditional method of beautification. The Tanaka and the flowers in her hair are a fantastic combination - that said my wife. Rgds, Wolfgang.

With the white bg this looks like a studio portrait. I imagine it on display behind the window of a photographer's shop somewhere in downtown Mandalay, the child's proud parents telling all friends and relatives to not forget to walk past the shop and go and have a look. Oh, their pride and joy...

What can I say?? This child, and your portrait, are both beautiful! I love the look in the child's eyes, the crown of flowers on its head, and, of course, the tanaka with special designs on its face. This portrait reminds me those made by Anne Geddes. It is something special. :-)

je vois que le voyage fut propice à de belles photos mais le pays a l'air de le permettre aussi et de donner de belles opportunités.
Très beau portrait touchant, du fait de ce regard quelque peu triste ou complétement perdu, interrogatif. Un regard puissant.
