[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
We just had a tasty pennyword salad and a fish curry at this riverside restaurant in New Bagan town when we noticed further away in the night that the pagoda was illuminated.

Town Pwe -festival- the local people informed us. Dances, performing and singing was on tonight's agenda until early morning. We decided to have a look.

The closer alleys looked like any fair with hand pushed merry-go-rounds, ice cream vendors and stalls selling burmese or korean actors posters.

Then we got to the stage which was already attended with half of the town, it seemed. Although I'm a naturally a quiet guy, I can really get nosey when it comes to finding a shot, I only have to switch my pixel sonar on : biip, biiip, biiiip... I passed over Ye advices not to wander around the slippery area of the public restrooms as I had the impression that behind the nearby tended cloth, something interesting was going on.

Bingo. I actually found the make up rooms of the next acrobat dancing show. I first tried shooting discreetly from outside, raising my hands above the clothes but soon got noticed by that guy on the left side... he smiled gently and encouraged me to continue.

That done, I noticed the first dancer stepping into the "room" (no need to describe the guy on the right handside) I had no time to ask him whether I could shoot him that his fellow was already handing a light bulb to give me a better light. I switched to paparazzi motor mode : I wish you had seen his face smiling from proudness when he heard the sound of 4 or 5 shots taken in a row. He energically raised his thumbs up at me, the guy was so radiant. It was then time for him to go on stage as my photo session had already postponed the show by a few minutes : I swear he jumped on stage higher and more enthusiastically he ever did in this Pwe dance show.

I wish you had seen the smile on my face too when I shot these images. Sometimes when you know you do good for someone, it's as good to be the photographer.

Funny, it looks like the guy on the right should be the leading man but the guy with the light bulb on the left totally steals the scene here, in a way I would like him to dominate the photo even more, a bit more to the left with more space behind the bulb man and crop the actor right in the middle of his nose. Still it's a fine photo though.

Cool you had the chance to see a pwe, This has to be one of the most indigenous theater, unique to Myanmar.
In a way, the photo may not show all you told us in the note, leaving us wishing as you say, but with the element of the man holding the lamp for you, there is a good sense of everyone playing along, and it's a judicious idea to let us see that, rather than merely going for the portrait.

I do actually guess the type of smile in your face. There was a mirror in many of my rooms in Myanmar!

Thanks, Luko.

Wonderful shot Luko! The bulb casts a lovely light on the subjects. Very good colour saturation. A real sense of "the show about to start" about this picture. And thank you for the excellent notes you provided.

I love your note and I find the picture even more joyful after having red it.

I feel that strong lateral light is perfect for that scene and the angle that light is glowing really conveys what you described, ie the left character trying to enhance the presence of the dancer. Great warm atmosphere in this shot !

hi luko
this is such a lovely warm portrait of both men, the dancer in his finery and the guy with the light raising it to help you get the shot. wonderful stuff!
sean

fantastic! the lighting really makes it.

Luko, hi :)
finally i manage time to be here (gosh, why the heck we have to work this much?!), and what a pleasure to see the pictures you brought from your last trip. and what a pleasure to read your stories.
you have the rare skill to capture bliss, no matter where it is.
my warm welcome back home to you :)

I see what you eman Luke. You have a lovely pcicture, with rich, somber, atmospheric colour. The relationship between the two subjects workd very well. Tanks Kevin

hi luko
great shot
love the lighting, the guy holding the lightbulb is great
good stuff =)

The fascinating thing about this splendid capture, Luko, is how the "light bearer" on the left becomes a) your assistant and b) a fascinating actor in his own right. So we have a "play within a play" conceit going on here which is...delightful.
And you know I like these Vittorio Storaro (...?) tones, right?
And man, with that f4.0 limit, you NEED a little help from a friend...
Super bien vu!

I like the lighting. I think the strangeness of the lighting creates some great shadows and just generally fits well with this bizarre scene. I find both the people here pretty strange, the half naked man with that strange pose, and the sort of feminine looking and feminine dressed man. Strange and compelling.

Hello Luko.

Great photo, wonderfull mood, almost surreal... it reminds me "Moulin Rouge" movie somehow!!!

Mário

Une ambience surréaliste ici !
Une scène caucase, les couleurs chaudes ...
On se croit sous terre ! ...
Bravo Luko, très réussi, une fois de plus.

This is great, Luko. I really like backstage shots such as this...and when done well they tell a much better story than the shots one would take during the performance itself. I'm actually planning to do a series of Shanghai Opera in the coming weeks, so I'm going to try to capture moments such as this one.

I really like the light, the way it paints the scene in these soft yet warm colors. I like the guy on the left, the one holding the bulb. I like the way he's looking at the guy on the right and the guy on the right is looking at me...a composition that makes a triangle not only with the subjects but with the viewer as well. This is just amazing, Luko, and tell you what: some of the best images, I think, happen by pure chance. I think this is one of them.

Luko,
I think your best shot from Burma so far. Full of emotion and that golden light. Great triangles too. I love the eyes the person on the right looking at the performer and then perfromer looking right at you. Great stuff. The note is really encouraging too. Its alwaays nice when someone not only encourages you to take shots but gets a kick out of it too.

Hello Luko,

I like the way the actor's profile is lit, leaving his left side in darkness. Great story about taking this picture, too.
