I have been pondering as to what to post for my 400th. It had to be Burma - a country that is full of fascination for me. Not a landscape, thats really not my forte, a daily life scene to share with you, maybe. But I suppose what gives me the most pleasure is, interacting with people and being able to photograph them. Recently a boat-trip from Mrauk U took us to outlying Chin villages. This lady invited us to her house where we shared a coconut and bananas and told us (via an interpreter) how she was tatooed as a young woman. She may look serious or sad here, but in fact she was quite the reverse. The practice stopped some 40 years ago, so in each village that I visited there wwere only several elderly ladies with facial tatooes.
The young women were tattoed to make them unattractive to prevent abduction by other tribes.

I was fortunate enough to visit these villages and TE gives me the medium to share.
Thanks for all of your comments and constructive criticism thus far, I have learnt a lot and have enjoyed being here.

Hi Elaine
Beautifull portrait. Maybe you took this one in the village of Kanpetlet ? close to the Victoria Mount ? I also have some of this place. Incredible face and story. Beautifull picture

Dag Elaine,
Fijne dag, Henk

hi eliane
it must be very painful to be tattoed like this, however you have achieved a very nice portrait showing a practice from a remote place.
a great picture for your 400 th

didier

Fascinating exotic face. The paintings seem like a projected image and it makes a nice combination with the pattern of her shirt. She doesn't seem serious at all, but more serene and peaceful. Congratulations on your 400th post.

Hi Elaine,
congatulation for your 400th picture. A beautiful portrait. And behind the tatoo there is still her beauty visible. I didn't have an idea about the reasons of these tatoos. I thought they regard it as beauty in their culture. Very interesting note.
Best wishes,
Nino

Hi Elaine!
This a wonderful portait in the sense of TE.
Learning about the world....
I envy you for having been in this village and listening to her story.
A very good exposure and for me she looks serious.
I take it to my favourites, because meeting people like this is and learning about foreign cultures is my main reason to travel.
To be honest,I`m thinking about to quit my Turkey plans for september and visit this "treasure country" again in Decmeber,or Cape Verde my second love.
Have a nice evening.
Kind regards,Leo

Congratulations on your 400th post. Love the pose, expression and detail on the lady's face. A nice moment.
As for Namibia - strongly recommended. It's excellent.

Hey Elaine!Congratulations!
I started a comment on your 400th post, and apparently didn't upload before I closed my browser (that happens to me sometimes when my boss enters, but this time I was at home ;-))
This is quite special, By now I have seen the whole series of women with these faces and I would like to know more. Your protraits are fantastic!! I love the soft yellow T-shirt AND the bright blue of the comb in her hair. With all due respect I am reminded of some species of bird that collects all kinds of blue things to attract a female bird (I'll try to find it, as it as the bird makes a beautiful nest for the female)
Is it mainly older women who have these kind of tattoos?

Iets anders, ben een beetje lui en moe, en aan 't bijkomen, en ben gestopt met het kamerkoor, maar heb zin in een borrel, of eten (bij mij). 'ns even bijpraten....lijkt me fijn.
doei, Rinie

Dear Elaine
Your portrait shots indeed are full of life, facets of daily life, the customs, the emotons all rolled within a single frame. I'm sorry I'm a bit late to congratulate you for your 400th post, but I have to say I look at your pictures for some inspiration. This one's no exception. I learnt about the tattoo customs prevalent in the Chin villages in Myanmar from your picture & the note. Even the comb tucked behind her hair is interesting. Focus might have been a wee bit off, being pretty strong around the neck (wrinkles) than on the face. But a lovely portrait all the same. Wish to see many many more pictures from you.
Best Regards
Angshu
