This is a repost of my yesterday's picture, to give the shepherd some context.

We were at a well in the north Gobi on our second day of the trek, and stopped here to watch the shepherds pump up the water for their animals.
Animals can drink only once a day, water is scarce in the Gobi. And as the Gobi has been a sea long ago, the water isn’t even completely fresh but a bit salt.
There is definitely an order in which animals are allowed to drink first, and of course, as horses are the most important animals, they go first.
Holding the reins of the horse he's sitting on, this man came with a very big herd of horses.

Yes, I prefer that, well I made that context comment. But surely this is a different image rather than a repost. Whatever, nice shot.

hi rinie, i do agree with richard, this is quite a different story now, and its hard to choose which one is the favorite, and the reason is just as they are different: the previous was telling the story of the man, this one tells us what he does and where he lives;
well done

A nice strength in this eye.
And an excellent composition, for me, even it would have been still better if the head of the horse was not cut.
I like the sweet colors too.

Goede Morgen Rinie!
Alles goed?
A nice portrait again!
excellent sharpness and saturation, nice natural colors.
Interesting note too!

Very good portrait. Natural colors make beautiful background for this man.
Well done!

I like the way you hsot this, very good dof indeed, the details are wonderful, well done

beautiful shot Rinie! pity you cropped out the horse head though...i like the sharp focus!

A very sympathetic portrait you made, Rinie. Yesterday's variant was nice too, but I think that indeed showing the man within the humble surroundings does enhance the total. Good use of DOF to make the shepherd stand out from the landscape setting, and good composition that gives some space at the left for him to "ride into". Very nice add for your fascinating travelogue.

Excellent picture of this and very good capture of this men face! DoF is also perfect! Well seen!

It looks quite different now with the horse's head and the stone wal, inie. A nother good shot of this Mongolian shepherd. I like very much his expression and the different levels of illumination on both sides of his face.

What an exquisite and very well defined protrait of this sheperd, Rinie. His expression is very complex, he looks curious and proud. Ofcourse the DoF is vital here and the barren landscape and the rough stones in the FG tells it own story of living in a tough invironment. Very well done!

nice shot.. i too don't know which one's nicer.. i love both of them.. nice note on their life

Bonsoir Rinie... Framed too tightly or too widely?
A bit of a pity you didn't include the horse's head - especially as your note is telling us about that important animal. [In that way I would prefer the original version which also is brighter and the smile is great!!!]
Here I especially appreciate his fier (is that English?) attitude and the sharpness you got.
I could add that the background seems a bit "dull" - in that way too I'd prefer the brighter blue of the original version - but I'm a bit ignorant [understatement! ;o)] about that part of Mongolie and it's possible the landscapes of Gobi of course will look more dull than the "golden mountains" of East-Govi of your previous shot?

Later edit: Just read Bert's comment I should have said barren instead of "dull", sorry.

Hi Rinie, I prefer this one. It's excellent composed, the light is quite soft, the shallow DOF is perfect. The horse head is a bit cut, but my attention is more focused on his expression, particulary on the eyes, which is the goal. I like the colours too, quite soft ones. An excellent portrait.

This image is a very strong portrait. I like the strong crisp nature of the shot. It is quite good!

A picture with a superb sharpness and light on the face of the shepherd. I like his expression and also the surroundings around him, a nice picture, Rinie !
