One of the more unusual sights, that I observed in Mongolia, was this outdoors collection of animal bones outside the town of Khatsgal. Not sure if it's a "pet cemetary" of favorite horses, or a slaughter-yard?
There is a live cow in the distance in front of the sheltershed for horses.

Both our postings today seem to have a similar theme ;-) A most unusual sight, this animal boneyard; I particularly like the incongruity of the cow wandering all alone in the background. Thanks for sharing.

this is most disturbing capture! And I really hope it is not a slaughter-yard! Rarely we see here such "wonders". Very unusual, spooky one might say. And there is a cow in a distance, wondering by itself between those bones...Somehow surreal but excellent contribution to TE!

This is one of those strange compelling posts where we can't extol its virtues as such, but thank you for showing it in the true TE spirit. Very macabre.

This really is the most macabre site that I've seen, and I am happy it is not an image of the "Killing Fields" in Cambodia. I wonder how it would appear if you took some of the yellow out, but then I have no idea what the real colors of the area are.
Warm regards and Happy Easter,

document très interessant mais qui sur mon écran apparait bien trop exposé, ce qui enlève pas mal de contrastes et de détails au niveau des blancs.
Belle profondeur de vue.

strange shot this animal boneyard.
me it seems that the photo is little overexposed.
however it's beautiful.

Very unusual indeed ! And I like these high horizons that give so much space in the photo...
(I have an possible explanation for these carcasses, but maybe not the right one : people having the same sort of Budhism for religion - in Tibet for instance but also in the provinces surrounding it - feed the vultures with those kinds of carcasses ;
... plus, there are also (please forgive those grim details) 4 ways of disposing of the human corpses in Lamaism :
with the fire (cremation = the most common practice), in the earth (burial, only in some cases), in the water (even more rare) and in the air (not that unusual : in that case, the corpses are cut in small pieces so the flesh will disappear more quickly).
That last solution is also the one prefered by the Parsis in India and the Zoroastrians in Iran.
I saw such cemeteries by accident when walking in the countryside south of Lanzhou, there was a very strange feeling there and it really struck me.
The cut trees are probably been used for the axes to divide the carcasses ; it's maybe a butcher's place, in that case they'll go and sell the best parts somewhere else ?
Anyway, at that altitude there is less smell or rotting flesh - oh well... Cannot continue, it's getting too long and I have been a vegetarian for more than 30 years, still I feel curious about all those practices. I'd be happy to read what you think of it !

I like this shot a lot, it is quite creepy especially how the bones are lying amongst all the stumps of the dead trees. very intriguing and morbid subject!

A picture true to the spirit of TE. A very unusual picture indeed, but interesting how the bones are scattered along with the cut tree stumps. Thanks for sharing!

Very strange and unusual picture, so interesting to see many bones on the fg and you have shown us the picture we never seen before. Picture abit too bright but it still ok, i like this picture and the story behind it. Thanks for the image...

Looks like a place where they do the butchering before winter sets in, Chris. Certainly an out of the ordinary shot - definitely not something that you would see on the Mongolian tourist brochures! Your shot looks somewhat over-exposed to me and perhaps requires a slight colour correction too. Cheers . . . David

Very spooky, and unusual caption. The alive cow makes a contrast feeling with the bones. I like it.
