By the time the Soviet Union first called for the liquidation of Mongolian monks and monastery sites in the 1920s, there were about 100.000 lamas in a population approximately of 700.000 people
During the Soviet Great Purge under Stalin, between 1937 and 1939, Soviet and Mongolian authorities executed thousands of lamas and destroyed more than 1000 Buddhist temples and monasteries which usually were the only fixed structures in a world of yurts.
Since the late 1940, one monastery, the Gandan Monastery, with a community of 100 monks, was open in Ulaanbaatar. It was the country's sole monastery and was more for international display than functionality.
A few of the old monasteries survived as museums
The leaders of the democratic revolution in 1990, began to identify and document the remains of magnificent wood and stone structures that for centuries served as the focus of Mongolian Buddhist culture
After reading these and similar notes, I was touched watching in this empty Temple, a box for offends almost full of bills,(strange, there were many dollars) and a plate containing envelopes
I asked the guardian who told me that some pilgrims and tourists would visit and pray, leaving money if front of Buddha statue
It proves that Buddhist is still part of life in Mongolia

It is the multi colours within this space that catches attention welcoming the new visitor. This remains one of the most interesting places of worship with a deep meaning behind every statue, corner or architectural design. You really make the most of the wealth of fabulous photographic opportunity as depicted in wonderful indoor natural light from this straight-on shot. This shot is enough to lift the spirit, with the bright colors, a meaningful shot full of content and captivating. Congrats, TFS.
P/s: I think we lose a bit of sharpness here probably due compression during uploading, hopefully you share my concern.

I am glad you show here this interesting aspect of Mongolian life. I did not have s slightest idea about the religion in this country. It is obviously sad that so many people suffered and so much of the culture was destroyed. It is of course disputable: for some people having so many monks may seem as a waste of resources. Indeed some religions tend to brain wash people as well and I know it from first hand as in my country people declare to be over 90% catholic and the public sphere is very much influenced by the church -sometimes for good sometimes for bad. Regardless though what one think about the lifestyle I believe that the religious structures like temples are part of our common heritage and deserve to be maintained by the society even if they are not religious anymore.
Lovely interior here -so much color and attractive details.

Beautiful decoration of the shrine. Very rich and vivic color, it is very similar to the Tibetan temples. Lots of things to look at and very good details.

You're capturing well this altar in Mongolian Buddhist temple by a good composition and excellent tone, so it's interesting and impressive to see the Budda's statue at center with gold color and the surrounding decorations and accessories with primary color. Especially, it's interesting for handmade sculpture.

Another altar view dedicated to the Buddha, very colorful items and painting, beautiful statue, high resolution and good exposition. An elephant in the fg reminding that the prince spent his life in Ganges plains, all the best, have a nice day Maria

Colorful display inside the Budhist temple in Mongolia. Well managed light indoor's, with fairly good clarity. Interesting the note written about, learning new stuff on TE almost every day.
