I had big problems to took that image.
It was noon and the sun, at that time at the Equator on the white sand of the Maldives is as a great bad dog. It can assalut you and burn your white (or grey-city one as the mine) skin in few minutes. The reflection on the white sand was so strong to have an effect similar to capture directly the sun in the sky.
The colours of the laguna, so pale, were fantastic with all the tones of green and blue.
The totally absence of wind, so rare on a Maldives' atoll, have a dead calm effect on the sea surface.

*Scanned image*

Dead Calm is also the title of 1963 novel by Charles F. Williams, which was the basis for the 1989 movie, directed by Phillip Noyce with Nicole Kidman, Sam Neill and Billy Zane.

A perfect image, Paolo, divided so neatly in 3 parts. Maybe not the sharpest but scans...On the other hand due to its painterly nature, it doesnt NEED to be that sharp.
Fantastic colors and compo.
Best,
Francis

oh man, with this one you spoil us (let us forget about that overexposure which in fact works well here, imo): three different layers, three different colours, plus the graphism made by the egdes;
stands out, definitely;
tc, j.

buona giornata,
Fabio.

excellent! not bac for a scan! great colours. nice 3 layers.excellent composition!
well done

Hello Paolo
Dead calm indeed.
The mixing and layering of the different colours here is just amazing. They all look so clear, almost unnatural.
Composition is very simple, yet very beautiful. The boat in the boat in the photo is perfectly just off center and easily captures the eye as a testemony of how calm it is here.
The sand is a bit "shocking" if you know what I mean, a bit bright, but considering the note I can imagine it was hard getting it better than this.
Thanks for sharing.

Hi Paolo, THIS IS EDEN :) You've found it, without wind at this time, so much heat and sun, pure white sand, perfect cristal water, yes this is perhaps not paradise but that looks like so much ;)
A great one, with your blue / green touch this time ;)

Salut Paolo,
Et bien !
Si ça c’est pas le paradis !
Les couleurs turquoises sont somptueuses !
J’adhère
Merci pour le partage
A bientôt
Sébastien

Hola Paolo,
you are born to make paradise pictures :)
Though you had problems with this one, its great! I like a lot :)
Nice day
Vero

Hi Paolo,
I understand your problem, scanning old films is difficult and you need an state of the art scanner to make the best of it.
And although there is much about this image what could be better, i still like the overall mood, because it's a place where we all want to be. so calm, so peaceful.
Great moment of capture, very good..!!!
Regards, Henk

Hi Paolo,
strong emptiness. The colours and sparse lines give way to the calmness of the place.
Thanks and regards, Gerrit

A simple tropical dream paolo, masterful in the simple setting with the good use of the lines and diagonals provided by the nature. The little boat a 'must' for the total impression. Nice work

Hi Paolo,
Simple shot but great effect, well seen the idea of this framing.

This is an example where scanning impoved the shot I think. It created these flat bands of uniform color which has given this shot a really nice graphic feel. The boat is a great addition, but the photo would be strong without it.

I'm glad you managed to brig us this beautiful photo ... it's really good!

Title is super :)

Merci Paolo...

I miei complimenti

Paolo, don't do this to me... it's too much beauty to take! ;-)
fantastic image, such a lovely partitioning withn sky, land, and of course the incredible emerald green of the ocean with the boat... fantastic work!
gracie, amice, ciao

Great photos!
I like your photos because you have color of the sea as I'm coloring it in my sea dreams.
And, you are OK, I think: because you have t-shirt of Einsturzende Neubauten (my favourite band in 80's), like Peter Sellers, born in June, like me... :-)))

Ciao Paolo,
Grazie e buona serata!
Attila

Whatever you did to counteract the bright sand worked well. This looks so idyllic; the position of the boat is just right.

hi paolo
fantastic colors it seems unreal, it looks like modern painting with large flat tint of colors.

well done
didier

hi Paolo
here the compo is great, very well balanced..
but the colors are strange, they look a bit yellow..i don't know why..
anyway, this is a good picture, and a good effort of scanning.
bye

loic

wow, "dead calm" is right.
the three layers of colours in your pic is beautiful.
simple and nice.
thx for sharing.

Hi Paolo
Very beautiful bicolored and minimaliste shot. It looks like
a painting. Which camera did you use to take this photo ? I
really appriciate the quality. Ciao
Quentin

Thanks for the note Paolo, I can almost feel the heat! I like the transition in this photo from the white sand to the green sea and onto the blue sky. The boat provides a good focal point in the middle.

Hi Paolo,
That's amazing. pure calmness and 'Maldives' atmosphere. I'd expect to see this in a Maldives tourism brochure! Really lovely work. Well done.

Magnificent landscape, great capture !
I love the different colors levels. I also like the graphism and your note.
Thanks Paolo

Hello Paolo!
Lovely view! Just like paradise!
Great colours and composition!
I'm dreaming .......
Regards!

Buon WE anche a te, Paolo
Luca

hola paolo

this is a beautiful photo and i like your title (i'm an australian and we love that movie).

i have to say, though, that i'm not taken with the green tinge to the shot. i've done a simple curves workshop to correct the colour. not much can be done about that blown sand though! :)

however you're a man i envy ... i dream of travelling to maldives but i fear i'll never have that kind of money to throw away! haha!

Very effective composition. Strange light in fact, with colors dissolved like a pastel. The top of the sky could also have been croped to give three perfect slices of colors : blue, green and white

Wooow
This is the PARADISE.
I like very the colours and compo. Excellent shot.
Sergio

Ciao Paolo,

Complimenti e saluti
Andrea

Hitoo much "chemical" but composition is good

Hello Paolo, lovely composition. mabuhay!

raul

Wow Paolo, what a paradise! I love the colors, it must have been hard to get such a blue with that strong light. Compliments :)
Sabrina

Is this a photo?
I think is an water colors painting.
Great image.

very impressing colours..congratulations..

Unbelievable! What a great frame!
Ciao Paolo.
The colors are excellent.
Evan

Amazing shot! Congratulations ;=))
Lovely colors and composition.
DEAD can not be so nice...
Pinar

Hi Paolo
Again a beautiful compo and almost artistic colour setting only also here the DOF is a bit less. And the sand is so white that there is no detail to be seen anymore.
greetings from Holland
Albrecht

a very good job a very good composition in a difficult technical position bravo. friendship of Belgium Henri

masterpice of composition but technic and a white blance for me is not good here.
Cheers

Hi Paolo,
exceptional mood in this shot.
I like the graphical rendering of the three main 'bands' of colour/tone (ie the light part, the deep tourquoise and the blue sky ;-)

Nice effect !
Best regards, Daniel

Paolo

Interesting image but with significant negative technical issues:

White point at 220 vs. 255...
Cyan color caste...
Color balance is off...
Sand dull....

Please see Workshop for suggested corrective actions. Thanks for the very good Photographer's Note which helped immensely with the editing corrections.

I suspect the poor image quality may have been related to the setup of the scanning capture software.

Regards

Chris

it is perfect for frontpaper of a book, but not with real colours..

Bellissima. Essenziale, perfetta direi.
ciao Stefano

this image has got too many points I see but I think there is initially a minor defiance of the basics as this type of shots go best in a horizontal canvas which I've done in PP for your acceptance or rejection :)
