Photographer’s Note

Whenever I see a paddy field, I remember someone who shoots Kodiang and its expansive countryside of paddy fields.

While paddy field in most places in Malaysia is synonymous with wide open country with dots and dashes of scarecrows and guard houses, hill or dry paddy doesn't has that agoraphobic real estate. Another difference is, hill paddy uses a lot less water than wet paddy.

Hill paddy is a once in 3 years love affair with the land and almost always it's not always horizontal. Hill or dry paddy is grown on hillside and in this photo, a polygamic coexistence in a coconut plantation. A common agricultural feature in the Kudat peninsular, the coconut country of Sabah.

It takes about 6 months to harvest and the land is left fallow for up to two years before the next planting. During the fallow period, the farmer grows corns, tapioca or just leave it to Mother Nature.
