Photographer’s Note
When I was very young still my father used to tell me about a barber in Petaling Street (Malaysia) named is "Long Yi Chen". Direct translation will mean "Deaf Ear Chen (the surname of the barber). Does not make much sense really.
Nevertheless this barber shop has been around even before our country gain independence 50 years ago. The owner of the shop has pass his business through generations. The barber in the picture may very well be the great grandchild of the first barber.
Till today Kuala Lumpur had developed with lots of sky scrapers but only this place...this barber...in the middle of the city can sustained without much changes, still running its business by the side of the street in ope air to serve the older generation with its traditional environment.
This photo is to be dedicated to the barber and all the older generation in Malaysia which is turning 50 years old on the 31st Aug 2007. We love you all...

Nice barber shop in the back lane. How much does it cost for a hair cut here? Maybe I can order black coffee & two half boil eggs with roti bakar kaya while waiting my turn. It costs me RM12 for a hair cut at an Indian barber shop in TTDI ... but I haven't had a cut for the last four months. Maybe I'll keep my long ... I'll see if the little I still have will hang well. It's a marvelous sepia tone photo. At first I thought you scanned it from your father's negative. Well done. Salam. Latiff.

Hello Adam - a great tribute to a golden era of daily life, heightened by your solid choice of going with sepia tones here of this street shot. Would have loved to see the barber in action standing on the other side of you, so we can see his front side as he is working, but oh well. Nice shot regardless!
