Mal de Perhentian Photo

Photographer’s Note

We went 3 times to Perhentian Islands, 2 small islands at 40 kms from the eastern coast of peninsular Malaysia.
The first time in the 1996 we rest there for more than 2 weeks, after a long visit of the rest of the peninsula. In the summer 1998 we went there after a 3 weeks in Vietnam for 10 days and the last one in the 1999 after a 3 weeks in Burma.

I think that there's a sort of "Mal d'Afrique" for that 2 islands, a Mal de Perhentian.
The sunset and sunrise colours, the fantasic reef at few meters from the beach, the totally absence of cars, roads, city, village, electric power, the deep silence of night, the polite people that live there...

I took that image from the patio of my bungalow on the beach on Flora Bay, the largest bay of Perentian Besar; the 2 small boats in the image were the only way to go around the islands. There was a track that crossed the mounts to the other side, but the large presence of big snakes in the forest (and sometimes also on the beach, we had 2 differents randez-vous with that sympathicous 1,5 meter long reptiles!) is a good reason to use the boats!

Awesome colors and view. The sky looks on fire here.
The inclusion of the boats on the water add scale to the picture.

Che meraviglioso paesaggio, Paolo! E ancora più lo apprezzo per il fatto che è ricavato dalllo scanner.
Mi intriga il fatto che ci sei stato più volte in questo posto! Deve essere davvero fantastico, se ti ha preso così. Esiste un tema sui posti preferiti e più frequentati, dove gli amici di TE tornano più spesso?
Io sto ad esempio per tornare in Sud Africa...

espléndida luz y maravillosos colores en el cielo, con bellos reflejos en el mar, y unas elegantes siluetas gracias al contraluz, todo funciona perfectamente en esta gran composición.
Es un lugar perfecto para relajarse viendo este anochecer, y un lujo poder verlo desde tu bungalow.

I used to go to perhentian island many times but have not been there for many years. I have never seen such a nice sunset. 1998 and 2006 now i believe is very much different. Must make it a point to visit there again. TFS Andre

Olá Paolo, I was going for the beautiful one that you just posted, but suddenly I was attracted by the title of this one, because the name Perhentian rings a bell in my heart. I was here in 2000 and so far it is the most paradise place I ever had. Amazing colors of the sunset captured here. I love the mood given by the darkness and strong contrasts. Tfs,
