The Majestic Station Hotel, Ipoh.
Hello to all TE members. I’m back with one of the oldest hotels in Malaysia, the Majestic Station Hotel, in Ipoh Perak.
Introduction:
Built in 1935, the Majestic Station Hotel, in Ipoh, Perak, is an impressive landmark which combines Moorish architecture with modern embellishments.
It houses the Ipoh Railway Station, which pioneered the first train travel in Malaysia, (previously known as Malaya, before the Independence). The first railway lines were laid by British to satisfy the transportation demands of the tin mining industry in Malaya.
The Station bears a close resemblance to its Kuala Lumpur counterpart, sharing the same architectural design and the distinction of being the most filmed buildings in their respective cities.
It is affectionately well-known as the ‘Taj Mahal’ of Ipoh, which is surrounded by a beautiful floral garden which serves as a charming welcome for tourist. In the garden, you will find the Ipoh tree, after which the city is named.
The station is under vast renovation when is image was taken. But the hotel still accepts guests. It is quite a “new” experience staying in such “colonial-feeling” room, like been transported back to the old days.
It was going to rain and those gloomy clouds were moving towards the station which prompted me to have it snapped. A “dramatized” landscape shot, huh!. External flash is used to have the front portion of the building lighten up.
I’ve posted another shot which was taken later in the evening is slow speed, to share with members.
Merchanics:
Exposure Program – manual
Speed Value – 1/40s
Aperture Value – f/4.5
Focal Length – 18mm
So, folks, enjoy this cool station and I will be posting the interior of the hotel next week.
Cheers to all and good day.

Hi Eric, An impressive photo to show the dark cloud at dusk. Nice contrast and good made use of the lights. I am not sure of why you use the flashlight to this picture.
The cloud on the top of the house shows that a rainstorm is coming.

Hi Pak Eric. You have a creative as well as captivating shot here. It is captivating because of the low angle you did in getting the ominous rolling cloud and the subdue hues of the Taj Mahal.
It is creative because you popped the flash. This created a radiating glow on the bottom portion of your image which, beside leading the viewer into the hotel,it also indicates the throw distance of your flash.Somehow, this flashlit portion brightens up the way to see the building, even though the flash couldn't reach the building as indicated by the "glow" on the ground.

This picture certainly transported me back to the late 70s when the express bus (Penang-KL) made a rest stop to somewhere in the vicinity of this hotel. Had totally forgotten about this building until I see this. Nice picture.

Selamat pagi Eric,
beautiful building for sure, and even with this dim light and dark cloud its clear structures stand out well. With no doubt I prefer this one to your night version because its lighting does not make it a very appealing night subject.
Have a nice day,

Hi Eric,
After going through all the other possibilities I will still vote for this one. I still preferred this natural perspective effect as it gives the feeling of more height making it impressive and majestic. The sky may appear to steal some of the limelight but the splendor of this building is still dorminant. Congratulations!! All the best.

Hi Eric - I like what youve done here, it looks colour and BW at the same time, very creative and artistic. I'm not familiar with this hotel, but I remember staying at a similar historic hotel in Penang, I don't remember the name, but it was the one used in the film "Beyond Rangoon".

hi Eric,
impressive shot. those dark clouds have turned an otherwise normal composition into something really dramatic. The amount of foreground is good, and the fact that it is lit up a little by the flash is even better.

Hi Eric. I haven't seen that much hotels that got such good points. Of course there is a reason for that: the combination of the placement of the hotel with that terrible sky. Well done; it makes it very dramatic!

Hi Eric. Lovely shot with excellent exposure and great contrast against the stormy sky. I was going to comment on the flash distance, but I note you have addressed that in your reply to Bani. I was going to comment on the perspective, but I note Aleksander has corrected that. So what is there left to say? Why didn't you ask the drivers to remove all their cars first? (just joking). Cheers . . . David

HI Eric
this photo looks pretty dramatic and your exposure seems to be very well managed.
But i was wondering what caused the light close to the place where you took this photo, my guess would be that it was coming from some light post, but I still wanted to make sure
thanks for the share

Hi Eric,
Nice dramatic sky! It does the most part of the job here! And we see the beautiful blue sky on the right. You have a nice contrast, the hotel looks like it is in three dimensions.
Unfortunately, it looks like it is lacking definition...all the edges (especially the tower on the left) look weird...like blurry or something. I checked and the file is only 48kb, you still have 152 kb of space left!
Nice picture! I like it a lot!

It's a nice shot, but why the very poor retouching on the sky? It looks like you've used the clone tool really roughly to extend the height of the picture.
