Photographer’s Note

A look from the front side of an old restaurant building, early in the morning. It is in Taiping, a town in Perak state, about 300 kms from Kuala Lumpur. My driver took me there in only 2,5 hours through the highway connections.

This restaurant ia only a few place in the town for breakfast in such an early time. It serves fresh, traditional Malay menu, such as roti chanai (a kind of flour based bread, baked on a pan and is usually accompanied by curry) and teh tarik (tea mixed with milk) with very cheap price (one or two Malaysian ringgit per menu. 1 USD is equivalent to about 377 MYR).

Taiping has some old buildings that still serve well until today. An 18th century building is used as prison for convicted criminal, while another beautiful building just across the prison becomes the museum of Perak state.

But Taiping also the home of Kemunting prison, a special detention center for those who are arrested under Internal Security Act. They can be held there without trial for two years and can be extended, theoritically, for life time.
