I have posted two sunsets and one sunrise to TE so far, so here is another sunrise to balance things up. I didn’t have to travel very far for this one. I got up a little earlier than usual one morning, and this was the view from my bedroom window.

Although I had seen many other sunrises like this in the years that I have been living in Kuala Lumpur, this was the first time that I had seen a layer of wispy low cloud snaking its way between the city buildings, with gives the view an added dimension. I think the cloud is at about the 20 storey level because this was shot from the 41st floor of the Villa Puteri condominium near the Putra World Trade Centre – this is the same level as the bridge on the Petronas twin towers in the background. Unfortunately I don’t have this view anymore, because I have moved to a quieter part of the city, but it was nice to wake up to this for the first five years that I was living in Kuala Lumpur.

This was taken with my old Nikon Coolpix P&S camera resting on the window ledge. I shot this on auto because I didn’t have time to play around with the manual settings because I know that colours like this in the sky can disappear as quickly as they appear. I have done no post processing other than to sharpen it a little. Normally when I compose cityscapes like this, I try to comply with the ‘two thirds, one third’ rule, but the sky was so good I didn’t want to crop the top, and I didn’t want to lose the street lights by cropping the bottom. So this has to be one of those exceptions to the rule (who said “rules are meant to be broken”?)

great
from this POV Petronas looks like old cathedra
thanks for sharing

What a morning ... I'm jealous ...
This morning I waited for such a sunrise with friends ... It never came ;^)
The blue and rose tones are beautiful.
I love the cloud (of pollution?) cutting the composition in two parts. That's a great pic !!
David

This is fabulous. I love the red colours both in the sky and from the city below. I love the whispy cloud as well. Excellent positioning of the Petronas towers off-centre in the frame. Good exposure and detail too.

Awesome! Beautiful colours of the city scenery. Great work, Nino.

These are the moments that I call..."decisive"!! Great work David!

Hi David
This is a good picture of KLCC and its surrounding. Good effect of the mist appearing in the mid.
Yes, you need to keep all the element fully intacted into this shot.
Well done, David.

It's a classic! And what do you mean 'one third, two thirds rule'? Some of the best photography is pure anarchy if you ask me. Good work man!!

Wooow, this must be the best picture from KL I've seen so far, another exaple of the magic created by pollution in the form of the wispy cloud.

This is a magical shot of KL David. I'm not usually one to comment on sunset/rise shots, but this is an exceptional one. Well composed with great colours and a haunting mist. Impressive.

I´m going crazy when i look to this photo! It´s like make on computer.. You have a very good eye to the photography...
Amazing sky, lovely clouds.. everything is beatiful on this photo!!

Good One!

Beautiful colours, the orange/blue, sunrise of KL city. The low clouds really made an impression here. Liked the lower part/foreground as it's still dark and the lights were still on (the 2/3, 1/3 never matter for this picture)
It's good picture esp you're taking it with yr old p&s camera. Well done mate !
Pictures of my hometown KL city wasn't many 1-2 years ago in TrekEarth.

Magnifique cette photographie avoir du bleu et de rouge soit dans le ciel et dans la cité. Merveilleux Ciao/jr

As a malaysian, i must really congradulate you on your work.... what a magnificent view, make me proud becoming a malaysian; at least we still have some beautiful scenary..

Hi David,
Impressive shot with beautiful colours on this sunrise. You were fortunate with a view like this on the early morning. Very nice the fog among the buildings.

Wow!!! It looks amaizing, unreal! There is a layer of city night life, separated from a sunset sky by visible mist bound

this is wonderful! all the nice things have been said... i can only add this comment :)

Hola David. Bien hecho, felicidades.

Great citiscape. I like the clouds among the towers. What a view you have from your flat!

I'm no expert in photoshop but I am posting a workshop where I am attempting to make the colours look a bit more natural. It's very much a personal interpretation of course; and it may be far from the true colours of that morning.

All the best,

Cedric

wow...what a fantastic shot you took sir....

very nice timing...good angle..super colour composition inside the frame...

great work sir

thanks

Beautiful shot. Even though the red streetlights looks like a little unrealistic to me, I still like them. Well done. I added to my "photos from you house" theme, I hope you don't mind. TFS!

Amazing shot!
The colours on the sky and the fog under the city and city lights - everything is great!
I like so much!
Best greetings!

Hi David,
your bedroom is really admist of the sky!
Very lucky to have this view!
Colours are fantastic and the low clouds in the middle of skyscrapers are simply stunning!
A smile
Luca

Bonsoir David,
une photo comme on en voit peu, même sur TE !
J'aime le ciel et la ville comme intimement mélés pour un spectacle unique. L'écharpe de brume qui serpente entre les tours est le lien entre le ciel et la ville. C'est magique !
Jacques

this is an amazing photo! Well done! you have captured the layer of cloud very well! the overall composition of the photo is very impressive as well!

wow - what an incredible shot David. Really well captured - that swirling layer of mist adds so much atmosphere to the image.

Wonderful shot! Beautiful place, lovely colours, I like this compo, sharpness, POV!
Interesting effect!
Well done!

This is an unbelievable view. I honestly have never seen such colors in the sky. The thin fog layer gives the picture an amazing Sci-fi feeling. Congratulations for , honestly, one of the best city sunrises I have ever seen!!!

Hi David,
I agree with the comments posted so far, and will not repeat them, except to say it is simply fantastic image.
I just wonder if you have considered perhaps increasing contrast and saturaton slightly? Also, I think image would benefit from the addition of nice with frame around it.

Amazing.
The view, the framing, the light.
The most impressive is the morning fog.

Excellent

Hi david, there are times when waking up early in the city, is rewarding. At least in the visual way. The low clouds wisping among the building and the red glows of the streets and flaring of the morning sky, could make this photo into a classic mornng shot of KL.
Bani

Great shot, I love this kind of shots and very often I wake up very early. I could use a ND gradient filter to balance the sky light. Nice Job!!
Many greetings from Greece.
Yes I do the tourist promotion of the area using this photo too.

Hello David,

What an ethereal vision. The colors and composition in your photo are fabulous.

During January 2000 I was in Malaysia briefly, ostensibly to give some talks at the Malaysian Institute of Tehnology in Johor Bahru. With my hosts I visited Kuala Lumpur for a couple of days. Your photograph gives a wonderful overview of the city, and the majestic Petronas Towers. In writing my book, 'Math and the Mona Lisa,' Leonardo serves as a foil in integrating science, mathematics and art. I had cited the Petronas Towers as edifices that used of the Fibonaccie series in designing the heights of the various courses in the towers.

Very impressive city, spectacular photo.

Warm regards,

Bulent

Green smiley tomorrow.

Hello David,

I myself love sunrises and sunsets and this one you captured is really spectacular... I love the colors. It must be really nice waking up in the morning with this view... too bad you moved :-)

By the way, thanks for your comment on my "Friends at a sari-sari store" photo.

Cheers!

Hello David! This is amazing shot, like something mystic, but it´s real! I like a lot of atmosphere in picture and colours make shot more better:) Thanks for sharing and have a nice day and summer!

Hi David,
Hopefully I'll be able to see a similar spectacular view of Kuala Lumpur when I will be there on the 21st and 22nd of August this year.
This is an excellent capture with beautiful colors. Well worth getting up early for. The low cloud gives it a kind of mysterical feeling.

Harko
