Photographer’s Note

The very popular Penang ferry is leaving the Weld Quai in Georgetown for the port town of Butterworth at the horizion.

Since October the Penang government has taken over the ferry service Penang-Butterworth from the Penang Port authority which was not able or unwilling to revamp and expand the ferry service. More often then not would be ferry passenger were left waiting far too long, sometimes more then one hour, for the next ferry. But also motorists were left waiting endlessly, especially at night. There was no shortage of demand; however the service was largely neglected. As a public transport the Penang ferry cannot generate huge profits. Consequently fares have to be kept low. In 2008 the Penang ferry operation produced a loss of 21 million Ringgit – a bit more then 6 million US Dollar. There is a lot of room for improvement which have to be seen in the coming months.
