Jusni from Kedah state flew into Kuching the day before and this late afternoon, we joined him to take a stroll along the waterfront waiting for sunset happening. As we arrived to meet him for 1st time since joining TE, he was already busy shooting. A brief introduction and greeting later, we were soon busy shooting in the warm afternoon sun.
Seen here was the boatman busy taking passengers home to their village across the river to the north side of Kuching city. Pay USD0.10 for the ride.
Prior to 1984, this part of the river was used heavily for transportation and cargo handling, and most boats would anchor along the riverbanks. Then the wharves were torn down and beautification waterfront development was built. Later the Sarawak River was dammed up by a causeway/barrage at its lower end downstream. For people on the north side, this could be a blessing because the current of the flow trickled down to slow speed, although some attributed city flooding over the years to this project.

I think the boatman really wanted you to shoot the publicity on the roof :)
I like the waves on the river, the vivid red and its contrast with the water and the superb reflection of the boatman.
Best regards, Paul

The low sun gives a warm light.
Amazing reflection and great contrast blue / red / yellow.
Disabled_A (0) 2009-04-27 12:54
first of all, my impression: an extremely bright and rich - almost fiery - combination of two main colours (red and yellow) which create a special "fiery" effect - against the quiet dark-blue background. I also like the composition and the rippled water.
Very unusual shot! and an interesting Note!
Warm greetings from Moscow,
dareco (17134) 2009-04-27 16:46

phwall (6785) 2009-04-27 17:37
This man seems to be getting a fair turn of speed and he's only rowing, he must have a well practiced technique.
Beautiful light, the setting sun has really given this image some magic.
Wow, 10 cents a passenger, that's a hard way to make a living.
Very nice work, and thank you for your informative and well written note.
manojtnair (435) 2009-04-27 21:31
nice patterns on the water. good lighting. bright colours on the roof and unusual roof with sharp top. to me in the thumbnail it looked as if it is a overturned boat. tfs.
Wanda1 (15142) 2009-04-27 21:50
Red and blue always make a nice combination and here together with the warm glow it's great to bring out the colurs. Love the rippled reflection and the man in action rowing.

Beautiful reflection with so deep clors. I also like very much the texture of the water.
sayeed_rahman (6436) 2009-04-29 9:33
Technically flawless..i wish you could make a composition out of the reflection only..there is some definition and the reach of your equipment is there you could have gone for it...would have been a cracker you know..
the red is so sharp...uuuuuuh...well caught Bill..cant take my eyes off it..funny huh ? :))
ciakgiak (30431) 2009-04-29 15:11
The low light makes the colors so warm and pleasant.

Fine colours and contrast

Philippe (11836) 2009-04-30 8:25
Hi, Bill. The orange boat stands out very well against the dark waters. It forms a nice diagonal line in the image and there are lovely reflections. This man has a very strange way of rowing, but I suppose this due to the protection behind him which prevents him from putting the rows in the middle of the boat.
Have a nice day,
Bluejeans (64251) 2009-04-30 10:55
Ola Bill ,

skippy007 (12510) 2009-04-30 20:17
Hello Bill, one day I'm going to to take a ride in a sampan or Tambang & maybe it will be a red one called Hot Link. ;-), one day. Nice light & colour, especially the contrast between the red boat & blue water. The setting sun gives it a golden glow, a nice touch.
Cretense (68703) 2009-05-01 4:05
Excellent daily life scene, excellent portrait! Great tight framing, simple but effective composition, beautiful "heavy" colours! Congratulations!
axiotea (21651) 2009-05-01 8:36
You've got the light right on the boatman and his reflection which gave an interesting contrast with the darker elements. The 'oily' texture and the riddles of the water are pleasant to look at...
BTW, I'm glad you did not mind I've shown 'your royal gate' to the whole world and thanks for the invitations ;))
The motorbike rider just came back to Goa few days ago...and we are going tomorrow for a short trip (of course by motorbike ;))
Longroute (19396) 2009-05-02 3:36
Blue-red-yellow: the most popular colours all together!
A neat and simple composition of great impact for this intense coloured boat and its fine reflection. Perfect position in the photo. The result is remarkable and pleasurable.
pierrefonds (66875) 2009-05-02 18:14
The reflections in the water are assets to the composition. The point of view is showing the action of the person rowing the boat. The quality of the light is ehancing the colors of the picture. Have a nice day.
hmusty (171) 2009-05-04 9:30
Hi Bill, o hisashiburi, long time no see.
Kinda miss you, really. I'm sorry for MIA so long.
Got busy and got stuck with what to post for TE. I will post photos regularly from now on.
Am I too late to comment on this photo? It'so clear and I learn much from the exif data, thanks.
How does it feel to have a buddy for photo hunting? Must be fun.
And about the river, I just hope any development done for it, at the end is totally for the sake of the people and environmental.
All the best, Henny.
jemaflor (98007) 2009-05-04 10:12
Very nice your shot, great light and colors, interesting reflections on water, well managed for a good result.
parbo (11092) 2009-05-06 11:41
Splendid effect of latest day lights worked perfectly on red boat and red wore boatman. Their reflections and layout in dark blue of water are just spectacular. Congratulations.
foozi (7101) 2009-05-06 18:19
excellent presentation with superbs clarity. I love the reflection very much and the dense colours are brilliant.
Well done and the ripples are captivating.
Charo (51212) 2009-05-07 12:55
Super frame closed on the boat and its occupants. Splendid texture and water reflections. Good job!
pablominto (53746) 2009-05-10 1:13
A classical composition with appealing simplicity!
The colour palette is stunning and the warmth in the evening light reflects perfectly off the blue water...
Good diagonal movement into the frame, and I notice the technique for propulsion!

Olá Bill, muito interessante esta fotografia. Gostei muito das cores e da perspectiva. Boas notas.
jafadabret (56501) 2009-05-20 8:58
Les couleurs et les reflets de cette photo sont superbes. J'aime cette composition qui isole cette embarcation dans le bleu de l'eau.
stego (24132) 2009-06-03 13:14
I remember at least another post of yours with this or a much similar boat. What stands out the most is the light and colours, with the warm yellow light of the sun glowing of the front of the deep red boat. The reflections on the dark water are also amazing. The compo is simple, but very accomplished, I like the central placement of the man and the boat on the diagonal. Besides everything else, it is also a great portrait of daily life.
Urs (14082) 2009-06-09 20:12
What a coincidence, I saw your critic on Jusni's site when I was writing a critic myself. Tomorrow I will meet Jusni in Alor Star together with two other friends from the Olympus forum for some photo hunting in Kuala Kedah. You see, the world really is small.
Your beautiful picture in late afternoon light is a perfect shot capturing nicely the reflection in the water as well. Vivid colors and great DOF. A very good job.
mafegan (8624) 2009-06-13 22:43
The low yellow light, bright red reflections and the unusual rowing method all help make Hotlink a good composition. Tfs, Marlene
