The monk is writing the name to be put in the roof tile.
Kek Lok Si Buddhist temple in Penang Malaysia is having a big project to make a huge roof cover above the majestic Kwan Im statue. This statue is reputated one of the largest ones in the world. Certainly they need some money for that project.
One of the way of upraising some fund from donaturs is writing down their name in the roof projected to be put there. Visitors from many countires, regardless of their origins, are willing to donate some money by wish their "small" contribution may provide "protection" to Kwan Im statue from the sun and rain. And they may have blesses from her in return.
I am impressed with the system of that donation.
