Penang (pronounced /pəˈnĉŋ/; Malay: Pulau Pinang) is a state in Malaysia, located on the northwest coast of Peninsular Malaysia by the Strait of Malacca. Penang is the second smallest state in Malaysia after Perlis, and the eighth most populous. A resident of Penang is colloquially known as a Penangite.
The island was referred to as 檳榔嶼 (Bīnláng Xù) in the navigational drawings used by Admiral Zheng He of Ming-dynasty China in his expeditions to the South Seas in the 15th century. Early Malays called it Pulau Ka-Satu or "First Island".
The name "Penang" comes from the modern Malay name Pulau Pinang, which means island of the areca nut tree (Areca catechu, family Palmae). The name Penang can refer either to the island of Penang or the state of Penang. The capital of Penang state is George Town. More specifically, George Town is also called Tanjung in Malay. Penang Island is simply Pulau Pinang (/'pulaʊ 'pinaŋ/) and Penang state is Negeri Pulau Pinang in Malay.
Penang is severally known as "The Pearl of the Orient" and "Pulau Pinang Pulau Mutiara" (Penang Island of Pearls).
Penang, originally part of the Malay Sultanate of Kedah, was given to the British East India Company in 1786 by the Sultan of Kedah, in exchange for military protection from Siamese and Burmese armies who were threatening Kedah. On 11 August 1786, Captain Francis Light, who was credited as the founder of Penang, landed in Penang and renamed it Prince of Wales Island in honour of heir to the British throne.
Many early settlers succumbed to malaria, earning Penang the "the White Man's Grave" epithet
Unbeknownst to the Sultan, Light had acted without the approval of the East India Company when he promised military protection. When the Company failed to aid Kedah when it was attacked by Siam, the Sultan tried to retake the island in 1790. The attempt was unsuccessful, and the Sultan was forced to cede the island to the Company for an honorarium of 6,000 Spanish dollars per annum. This was later increased to 10,000 dollars, with Province Wellesley on the mainland of the Malay Peninsula being added to Penang in 1800. An annual honorarium of 10,000 ringgits continues to this day be paid by the Malaysian Federal Government to the state of Kedah.
In 1826, Penang, along with Malacca and Singapore, became part of the Straits Settlements under the British administration in India, moving to direct British colonial rule in 1867. In 1946 it became part of the Malayan Union, before becoming in 1948 a state of the Federation of Malaya, which gained independence in 1957 and became Malaysia in 1963.
The island was a free port until 1969. Despite the loss of the island's free-port status, from the 1970s to the late 1990s the state built up one of the largest electronics manufacturing bases in Asia, in the Free Trade Zone around the airport in the south of the island.
On 7 July 2008, George Town, the historic capital of Penang was formally inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site alongside with Malacca. It is officially recognized as having a unique architectural and cultural townscape without parallel anywhere in East and Southeast Asia

Hey Foozi,
Nice shot, but even better are your great notes. I've learnt a lot about the history of Malaysia from your recent posts!
I like the saturated colours and the sky is fantastic. Again, like your last post, given that there is nothing in the composition close to you, and you used a small focal length, f13 is probably overkill, much lower would have been fine and sharper. Also, I notice some lens distortion with the tall building on the left, looking like it's leaning right. You can easily correct this in photoshop and probably even with the standard camera software so that all the buildings are straight. Hope this helps!
all the best

Hi Foozi,
I see what you want to show, the architectures in city, the sea and especially the sunny sky with different types of clouds, good pov to show it, nice color, just the photo need more sharpness.
檳榔嶼 in Pinyin is Bīn Láng Yu, 槟榔屿 in Chinese Simp, thanks your detail note.

Hello Foozi,
Cumulonimbus cloud raising up into the sky on the red roofs has been impressively captured with a good framing. I like this soft but sharp depiction a lot.

Hi Foozi,
I like your POV and the balance you have in your composition, the huge sky with the tropical clouds dominates the shot. Something is strange here, have you treated the shot in post, the buildings seem to lean into the shot plus for f/13 the shot seems to be quite soft.
Fantastic note to go with your image, very good effort and much appreciated.

Hi Foozi,
a very informative note is accompanying a beautiful impression of Georgetown. I like your idea of the red roofs in the foreground very much, they are creating nice contrasts to the blue sky and the white clouds. TFS!

Hello Foozi:
I am very pleased this vision of urban landscape, with a balanced handling of light and beautiful colors, especially contrast from the sky in front of the white tones and even more of the red roofs.
Perhaps the only flaw is so notable tilt to the left of the tower, but it's a very personal, because generally I think a nice job.

Hi Foozi
The shot overlooking the city is great with that sky with such cumulous clouds.
Perhaps just a tiny bit more of sharpnening on the buildings and they would stand out more.Nevertheless its a good shot.

Hello Foozi,
The fine colour palette is what catches my eyes!
And of course that great cloud formation, that looks like cumulus to me...
Good details in the city skyline, and the foreground red roofs stand out well!

It is a nice view of what seems to be a quite modern town. The sky is beautiful with those fat clouds which are a very common feature of the tropics. The POV is great and the lovely colours make the picture very pleasant to the eye. Well done.

Hi Foozi,
Beautiful sky for a picture over the city, the big whit cloud is very nice and the vivid blue catches the eye. Nice POV and framing as well. It seems to have a blurred spot over one of the buildings. Did you came over a airconditioned place with your camera. Sometimes with umid air like the one in the South-eat Asia the lens get fogy when we go from an aircon room to outside...
