Photographer’s Note
After Taiping I went to Penang, again to complete my end of year task. It is not very enjoyable when you know too many things tp be completed within such a short time.
I took this shot on the other ferry from Butterworth to Penang, and the one on the photo is from Penang to Butterworth. This ferry was used eversince I remember. Very long time and it seems quite antique nowadays. It is for fun ride not for fast transportation. For fast way we used Penang Bridge.
Penang (pronounced /pəˈnæŋ/; Malay: Pulau Pinang) is a state in Malaysia, located on the northwest coast of Peninsular Malaysia by the Strait of Malacca. Penang is the second smallest state in Malaysia after Perlis, and the eighth most populous. A resident of Penang is colloquially known as a Penangite.
The island was referred to as 檳榔嶼 (Bīnláng Xù) in the navigational drawings used by Admiral Zheng He of Ming-dynasty China in his expeditions to the South Seas in the 15th century. Early Malays called it Pulau Ka-Satu or "First Island".
The name "Penang" comes from the modern Malay name Pulau Pinang, which means island of the areca nut tree (Areca catechu, family Palmae). The name Penang can refer either to the island of Penang or the state of Penang. The capital of Penang state is George Town. More specifically, George Town is also called Tanjung in Malay. Penang Island is simply Pulau Pinang (/'pulaʊ 'pinaŋ/) and Penang state is Negeri Pulau Pinang in Malay.
Penang is severally known as "The Pearl of the Orient" and "Pulau Pinang Pulau Mutiara" (Penang Island of Pearls).
Penang, originally part of the Malay Sultanate of Kedah, was given to the British East India Company in 1786 by the Sultan of Kedah, in exchange for military protection from Siamese and Burmese armies who were threatening Kedah. On 11 August 1786, Captain Francis Light, who was credited as the founder of Penang, landed in Penang and renamed it Prince of Wales Island in honour of heir to the British throne.
Many early settlers succumbed to malaria, earning Penang the "the White Man's Grave" epithet
Unbeknownst to the Sultan, Light had acted without the approval of the East India Company when he promised military protection. When the Company failed to aid Kedah when it was attacked by Siam, the Sultan tried to retake the island in 1790. The attempt was unsuccessful, and the Sultan was forced to cede the island to the Company for an honorarium of 6,000 Spanish dollars per annum. This was later increased to 10,000 dollars, with Province Wellesley on the mainland of the Malay Peninsula being added to Penang in 1800. An annual honorarium of 10,000 ringgits continues to this day be paid by the Malaysian Federal Government to the state of Kedah.
In 1826, Penang, along with Malacca and Singapore, became part of the Straits Settlements under the British administration in India, moving to direct British colonial rule in 1867. In 1946 it became part of the Malayan Union, before becoming in 1948 a state of the Federation of Malaya, which gained independence in 1957 and became Malaysia in 1963.
The island was a free port until 1969. Despite the loss of the island's free-port status, from the 1970s to the late 1990s the state built up one of the largest electronics

Hi Foozi,
Good paint job on the ferry, I digress, nice shot, I like the contrasting colours throughout the shot and your composition putting the ferry on the right exiting frame gives the impression the ferry is going somewhere.
Thank you for a very good note to go with this image.

It is a very similar ferry to those I have seen and used in Indonesia to go to Madura Island. Are they always full of cars and people? And, is it a reliable service? The photo is very nice and the sky was wonderful that day. Well done.

Hello Foozi,
Beautiful capture of the ferry boat glowed red in the evening sun. The sky with various clouds is also attractively depicted.

Hello Foozi,
Around my place all ferries are black and white, but I notice they are more cheerful coloured like this!
This is a fine and well balanced composition, showing a part of maritime transportation history...
The vessel is for sure an eye-catcher!

Hi Foozi,
The colours in this image are really bold and stand out well, particularly the colours of the sky. I think the image is a little blurred mind. Perhaps f14 was overkill, at 18mm focal length and with the boat so far away, probably f5.6 would have been fine and you would have got a faster shutter for a sharper image. None the less, and nice photo and great notes!

Hello Foozi, That old ferry makes a very interesting & colourful subject, in this shot the colours are well saturated with the ferry in a good position in the frame, contrasting well with the blues of sky & water. You have plenty of sky which I think is good because the sky has good cloud formation & is not boring.
Thank you for the very interesting & informative note.

Hello Foozi
How are you my friend? Won't be over to Malaysia for a good while yet but when I do I will come looking for you, no problems. Excellent shot here, what a fascinating coloured boat which works well against the blue in this capture. Maybe just a bit more sharpening to bring a bit more detail but the lighting is very good here.

Foozi,
Very informative note to go with this very beautiful image, the color and light are well managed and ballance, very vibrantly and lively. Very good composition with the boat a bit off center. Good clarity and sharpness is fine. Thanks

Hello Foozi,
for me this is a very strange ferry and – yes – it really looks antique! But I like its shape and the colors and you have captured a nice view on it with these lovely blue colors of the sky and the sea creating beautiful contrasts. Your note is excellent! TFS!
Warm regards
