Photographer’s Note

Since the 19th century there are some water villages on stilts, the clan jetties, next to today's ferry terminal on the island of Penang. They are named after the last name of the residence of the ethnic Chinese living there. Each jetty comprises of row houses linked by planked walkways over the water. Their ancestor’s came from small coastal communities in Fukien province China, and were mostly fisherman and gatherers of oysters.
