Photographer’s Note

Hello friends in TE,

I am posting another seascape with this unique architecture sitting at the tip of the earth :-). This little place served seafood to the locals and visitors. The shot was taken at almost sundown with the light at the place has already been switched on. The rocky foreground is the retaining wall as the wave can be very rough at certain time of the year.

The sea comes into full view about two kilometres down the road. Here, visitors can observe the daily activities of the locals. Much of what happens depends largely on the tides.

During high tide, fishermen set out to sea, returning only when the tide turns. Most use small crafts or sampans made by local boat makers whose workshops dot the coastline.

During low tides, one can watch mollusc collectors wading through knee-deep mud to sieve for mussels, cockles and clams. These are either snapped up by waiting buyers at the shore or sold at small makeshift stalls. Locals like to buy their seafood this way as they are fresher and cheaper than that sold at the market.

Indeed, the Kuala Sanglang-Kuala Perlis stretch of coast has the highest concentration of fishermen in the entire state, with the fishing industry being the top employment provider.

Much of the shoreline is rocky as a result of on-going road works by the government but there are still pockets of sandy beaches if you look carefully. These places are favorite haunts for those who like to take short strolls on the beach or enjoy quiet picnics.

The picturesque fishing village of Kuala Sungai Baru comes into view about halfway through the journey. Here, visitors can buy fresh marine produce or get a taste of the simple lifestyle of the fisherfolk. You can watch them drying shrimps, salt fish and squid in the open or mending their nets.

Visitors like to stand in the middle of the single lane Sungai Baru Bridge and take memorable pictures of colorful fishing boats chugging up and down the river.

The coastal road ends at the mouth of the Perlis River. Here, tourists can take their time to explore the coastal town of Kuala Perlis, the second largest town in the state, located 13km south west of the capital of Kangar.

Thanks for viewing!
