The Majestic Station Hotel, Ipoh.
Hello to all TE members. I’m back with one of the oldest hotels in Malaysia, the Majestic Station Hotel, in Ipoh Perak.
Built in 1935, the Majestic Station Hotel, in Ipoh, Perak, is an impressive landmark which combines Moorish architecture with modern embellishments.
It houses the Ipoh Railway Station, which pioneered the first train travel in Malaysia, (previously known as Malaya, before the Independence). The first railway lines were laid by British to satisfy the transportation demands of the tin mining industry in Malaya.
The Station bears a close resemblance to its Kuala Lumpur counterpart, sharing the same architectural design and the distinction of being the most filmed buildings in their respective cities.
It is affectionately well-known as the ‘Taj Mahal’ of Ipoh, which is surrounded by a beautiful floral garden which serves as a charming welcome for tourist. In the garden, you will find the Ipoh tree, after which the city is named.
The station is under vast renovation when is image was taken. But the hotel still accepts guests. It is quite a “new” experience staying in such “colonial-feeling” room, like been transported back to the old days.
It was going to rain and those gloomy clouds were moving towards the station which prompted me to have it snapped. A “dramatized” landscape shot, huh!. External flash is used to have the front portion of the building lighten up.
I’ve posted another shot which was taken later in the evening is slow speed, to share with members.
Exposure Program – manual
Speed Value – 1/40s
Aperture Value – f/4.5
Focal Length – 18mm
So, folks, enjoy this cool station and I will be posting the interior of the hotel next week.
Cheers to all and good day.

Hi Eric, An impressive photo to show the dark cloud at dusk. Nice contrast and good made use of the lights. I am not sure of why you use the flashlight to this picture.
The cloud on the top of the house shows that a rainstorm is coming.
rafelito (3648) 2006-04-17 0:16
Superb composition and colors, nice POV
bakes888 (18499) 2006-04-17 0:24
Nice composition and excelent exposure, just enough detail and subtle colour.
ewanshamsudin (347) 2006-04-17 0:59
Very dramatic indeed -- more so if the cars were not there.
vapours (8264) 2006-04-17 1:02
A nice electric atmosphere you have created here thanks to the clouds, love the angle as well.
abulafia (4900) 2006-04-17 1:28
I agree that the station is very majestic, but the black sky above it is far more impressive.
xavshot (69835) 2006-04-17 2:02
superbe photo avec une très belle ambiance. J'aime beaucoup cesteintes grises. Bien vu
neokreo (276) 2006-04-17 2:11
This is superb!! The clouds and the lights are so dramatic. It's good that u managed to capture the building pretty well even though the the sky is dark.
Graal (97765) 2006-04-17 2:39
interesting view, nice a hotel. I like the unusual night colours but perspective need corrections. Good captured and idea for photo.
rabani (9645) 2006-04-17 2:59
Hi Pak Eric. You have a creative as well as captivating shot here. It is captivating because of the low angle you did in getting the ominous rolling cloud and the subdue hues of the Taj Mahal.
It is creative because you popped the flash. This created a radiating glow on the bottom portion of your image which, beside leading the viewer into the hotel,it also indicates the throw distance of your flash.Somehow, this flashlit portion brightens up the way to see the building, even though the flash couldn't reach the building as indicated by the "glow" on the ground.

Very nice picture with such a dramatic effect !
The sky is really fantastic and the lightning is adding to the overall atmosphere.
ChrisJ (99072) 2006-04-17 3:48
I like the dark, ominous skies, in the bg. Moody & atmospheric, with good color, lighting, & sharpness. Tfs!

This picture certainly transported me back to the late 70s when the express bus (Penang-KL) made a rest stop to somewhere in the vicinity of this hotel. Had totally forgotten about this building until I see this. Nice picture.
Vato_Law (12720) 2006-04-17 9:43
Oustanding photo you have here! Love this dark mood ambiance. Perfect sharpness and use of light! Great colours over the building itself and on the sky.
Flavia (10352) 2006-04-17 12:26
I sure prefer this one. I like the dark tones and the sky is a great addition to the wonderfull building. As usuall you make a great use of the flash to creat a nice effect. Well captured.

Hi Eric, This is a very good composition with the white building showing up so well against the dark clouds behind. I alway enjoy visiting this town built on various mining operations over many years. Well shown. Rgds Murray

Selamat pagi Eric,
beautiful building for sure, and even with this dim light and dark cloud its clear structures stand out well. With no doubt I prefer this one to your night version because its lighting does not make it a very appealing night subject.
Have a nice day,
athos99 (6894) 2006-04-18 16:41
Very nice light with this black sky.
The atmosphere of this picture seems a little bit dramatic.
kinginexile (2598) 2006-04-19 1:18
Hi, Eric, I used to visit friends in Ipoh, and I do remember the station, an indeed the hotel inside, I think your timing to take that shot does marvel to the building and lets us suggest maybe more lore about it than is really. The power of photography!
TeresaT (10806) 2006-04-19 18:12
Nice capture of thisd beautiful hotel.
Good POV, colours and light.
The stormy sky is also beuatiful.
aloyho (6798) 2006-04-20 3:43
After going through all the other possibilities I will still vote for this one. I still preferred this natural perspective effect as it gives the feeling of more height making it impressive and majestic. The sky may appear to steal some of the limelight but the splendor of this building is still dorminant. Congratulations!! All the best.
kurtyang04 (478) 2006-04-20 9:10
You really take good chance of the weather. The storm create great mood here and the composition is nice too. The impact is strong. pretty much well-done work.
aznegrao (10316) 2006-04-21 19:11
Perfect night shot Eric!!!!

PJE (20758) 2006-04-24 0:26
Eric this is an outstanding photo with the dark sky looming in the background. The building has such character. You certainly had excellent timing for this one Eric. Very nice!
ckuhn55 (2670) 2006-04-24 10:45
Excellent POV, cropped off right side of building is a bother,,but that is me..cheers
capthaddock (28790) 2006-04-24 11:18
Hi Eric - I like what youve done here, it looks colour and BW at the same time, very creative and artistic. I'm not familiar with this hotel, but I remember staying at a similar historic hotel in Penang, I don't remember the name, but it was the one used in the film "Beyond Rangoon".
tjanze (5674) 2006-04-24 15:48
Beautiful arhitecture, interesting light, with dramatic sky.Hotel works a little fearful to me.
Without cars, photo will be much better, but you cant do nothing against this. Regards Vlado
cam (9041) 2006-04-25 15:22
Historical building are always interresting as such, through their architecture.Your excellent note makes it alive for those who like me do not know the stories of their life.
The menacing sky makes this picture unique and alive, very dramatic.
Have a good week
devimeuxbe (58557) 2006-04-26 1:20
There is an unusual light and colors in this picture. It give a mystery atmosphere.
The composition is superb.
vincent24 (9060) 2006-04-26 7:14
What an impressive sky!it's the end of the world..the regret is the to strong compression eating details:47kb it's far from the 200kb limit, watch it for the next..
andchew (476) 2006-04-26 9:35
Bro, Wa lau eh, nice shot man !!!
MIG13 (0) 2006-04-26 11:09
Hi, Eric! What a nice building! Your pic is great, specially for the perspective and the sky's dark colours! Thanks for sharing! By the way, I'm glad about your visit to my pics and your useful comments and suggestions! Greetings from Brazil! Miguel.
colinbrenchley (6431) 2006-04-27 16:20
Eric, you have captured an amazing moody sky that adds atmosphere to this image. You can see the turbulence in the base of what is a cumulonimbus cloud.
valdec (7355) 2006-04-27 16:34
Piêkne barwy, bardzo dobra kompozycja.
quantabeh (5205) 2006-04-28 8:33
impressive shot. those dark clouds have turned an otherwise normal composition into something really dramatic. The amount of foreground is good, and the fact that it is lit up a little by the flash is even better.
Stepan (27210) 2006-04-28 12:59
Impressive sky ans atmosphere... Looks like a place from a scarry movie ! Interesting warm light, in the middle of the compo too.
thaprem (2554) 2006-05-03 6:21
This Wide angle is fantastic!.The lighting...The mood...All transfers one to a land of past!!!
Right kind of place for me!.
I like the way it is presented!.
anesugur (18789) 2006-05-03 7:29
Dramatic sky, good light and colors.
Very good job. Uğur
hdl (6995) 2006-05-03 7:33
Hi Eric. I haven't seen that much hotels that got such good points. Of course there is a reason for that: the combination of the placement of the hotel with that terrible sky. Well done; it makes it very dramatic!
banyanman (7789) 2006-05-03 13:10
Hi Eric. Lovely shot with excellent exposure and great contrast against the stormy sky. I was going to comment on the flash distance, but I note you have addressed that in your reply to Bani. I was going to comment on the perspective, but I note Aleksander has corrected that. So what is there left to say? Why didn't you ask the drivers to remove all their cars first? (just joking). Cheers . . . David
DLM (6479) 2006-05-06 7:38
Amazing shot Eric ,looks like the calm before the storm,TFS
dHitman (0) 2006-05-07 3:52
Excellent shot with low lightings and the mood and colours is just awesome. Nice POV too. TFS!
simplyoga (6492) 2006-05-09 5:02
Foto yang bagus sekali..
biasanya saya tidak suka dengan awan mendung, tapi di foto ini awannya malah menambah dramatis foto ini..
saigon (6443) 2006-05-09 7:45
magnifique composition de ce batiment type coloniale!
rabdelnoor (3421) 2006-05-12 0:43
Really majestic hotel. The sky is quite impressive and created a nice atmosphere. Great light and good contrast.
flydragon (0) 2006-05-14 4:27
like the mood here with this grey
and dark sky
Annabel (112) 2006-05-17 9:30
the clouds gives this picture a haunting aura. makes the building looks like it has been abandoned for years. very dramatic, reminds me of the colonial era. the dim lights makes the building look a bit eerie dont you think? great shot!
sarju (5324) 2006-05-21 4:03
this photo looks pretty dramatic and your exposure seems to be very well managed.
But i was wondering what caused the light close to the place where you took this photo, my guess would be that it was coming from some light post, but I still wanted to make sure
thanks for the share
regards .... sarju
PS: Thanks for a very informative note
carmem_busko (3718) 2006-05-23 2:35
Hi, Eric, indeed a dramatic sky, in a well balanced capture.
I've got you are experiencing some macro shots, also, gonna see soon.Cheers.. and thank you!
oochappan (16981) 2006-05-26 3:25
How could I miss this one, maybe too busy in Rotterdam ....
Dramatic Eric, with those heavy textured clouds where the light colored hotel sticks out with all the contrasting warm lightening.
An outstanding shot.
ArtLook (2348) 2006-05-31 2:11
Dramatic sky and impressive contrast and colors. Very good shot, Bravo!
With BEST Regards,
RGatward (20062) 2006-06-01 6:46
Hi Eric, not sure how I've missed your posts before. I've just noticed this from the Ipoh portfolio. Well a really marvelous portrayal of this great building here, well deserving of all the praise. Great weather to set it off.
harras2000 (710) 2006-06-01 10:14
Nice shot! I like the dramatic atmosphere with the dark clouds very much.
klyee75 (778) 2006-06-03 1:38
What a good one...I thought it's a National Geographic photo....a dramatic clouds ..the flash works very well if not the facade of the building will be too dark. Good job Brother...oh ya I have just bought a D200...hehehe
chaity (1539) 2006-06-03 5:01
Hi Eric, thanks for showing this photo as it brings back some memory of Ipoh town. The dark clouds behind posted some threatening feelings.
hantulaut (3441) 2006-06-07 5:46
whoaaa, good shot, very strong.
The cloud really frightening :-)
Foto bagus pak Eric.
dcawker (5717) 2006-06-13 1:55
Just great, Eric.. The stormy sky really enhances this photo as well. Excellent, Doug!
gancs67 (2) 2006-06-20 11:05
You caught the best timing.
Manamo (3682) 2006-06-25 22:54
Nice dramatic sky! It does the most part of the job here! And we see the beautiful blue sky on the right. You have a nice contrast, the hotel looks like it is in three dimensions.
Unfortunately, it looks like it is lacking definition...all the edges (especially the tower on the left) look weird...like blurry or something. I checked and the file is only 48kb, you still have 152 kb of space left!
Nice picture! I like it a lot!
elmec (12210) 2006-07-04 13:43
Such a great light and colours!
I like the small pieces of colours and most of grey-green tones!
Very good frame and composition!
hoorge (1434) 2006-07-09 0:54
The tones, colours, composition, PoV are great.
sabyasachi1212 (19773) 2006-07-28 4:37
The architectural style of this building could alone have provided a good image but combined with the dramatic sky and combination of artificial and natural light, its simply impressive. Well Done!

It's a nice shot, but why the very poor retouching on the sky? It looks like you've used the clone tool really roughly to extend the height of the picture.
fooeleen (713) 2009-05-14 5:22
my hometown! beautifully captured...
