Photographer’s Note
23 JANUARY 2003, PAUL STREET, SEREMBAN
With the growing expanse of the suburbs as a result of Malaysia's push towards greater urban expansion along the peninsula, many of the old colonial towns are dying at the centre.
Here, this run down strip of Chinese shophouses, once the economic backbone of city life, lie mostly dormant and closed-- too expensive to restore.
What is stifling inner city survival is the apparent lack of interest of modern buyers looking to establish retail in the older quarters-- opting for the modern structures at the cities' peripherals. Those that are still open are establishments that have been run by the same family for much of the 20th Century.

i wouldn't be so keen upon buying here either, it looks like a real highway in the front.. i love the tonal range combined with the very hard contrast... and walking people can look so silly when frozen... michael it's wonderfull, and so is the building when i look at it again

youre doing a very good job with b&ws
and its really good that you caught atleats 1 living soul in this photograph otherwise it would have looked like a ghost town' i like the rich bright white that youve got here and in your other photographs.do you use photoshop for this or some filter. i mean is the white in the original photographs also so nice?

J'aime bcp l'apport du noir et blanc sur la composition de cette photo. cette ville abandonnée dégage une ambiance forte, et la perspective est intéressante !

Very nice work. I like the strong contrasts. I like the signs too, they are as interesting as the buildings.
