A view of the Melaka River showing the "old" pre-war shophouses blending with the newer buildings. This was taken from the mid-span of the Sungei Melaka Bridge, in the direction of upstream.
There was a time when boats laden with goods would travel up from the river mouth where the goods would be unloaded at the back of these buildings.
Malacca was an important trading port in the olden days. There were wooden draw-bridges built across the river. These bridges could be drawn up to allow the passage of boats into its hinterland upriver. |
