Malacca is a very old city but one full of contrasts. It has the old colonial (16th century Portuguese and 17th-18th century Dutch) parts as well as old Chinese temples and more traditional Malay palaces and houses and and more modern buildings. The river served as a traditional port and there are still barges and other craft to be seen (or there were in 1988). I was fascinated by this row of buildings sticking out over the river - built of well worn timber and rusting iron to give a variety of textures.

Hi Ian
The variety of building materials are creating interesting reflections in the muddy water. Thanks for sharing this very clear image from 20 years ago and it is nice to hear from someone else with scanned images. Marlene
Hi Ian,
a really impressive view, good composition, BG seems a little overexposed but main subject is well taken.

I was struck by this view and by a fantastic market there in the 70s, later when working for 10 months in Malaysia in 1990 and returning regularly to that city, everything had been transformed - only a few such houses remain that could be seen with a boat tour... I wonder if these houses are still there !
Interesting, specially that Malaysia is developping so rapidly !
(I like such rusty old houses on stilts - it makes me a bit nostalgic !)
TFS,
Cath.
a little too bright in my opinion however it is well composed and i see well the details.

Hello Ian,
greetings and warm regards from Malaysia.
You have extensively travelled and thanks that you have visited Malaysia, and specifically Malacca. I hope you have more of those.
I myself did not venture well enough in Malacca and this one is quite exciting of the backlane of the houses near the river.
I totally gree that those rusty zinc roofs and old timber give good texture in photography.'You composed it well to depict the environment.
Regsrds,
Foozi
Nice one dad :)
I remember looking down at that canal (or one like it) from our hotel room and thinking it was one of the most fascinating things we saw in Malaysia.
This photo brings it all back.
