"Aadal Kalaye Devan Thanthadhu.." - Art of dance given by god!..
Traditionally, Hindu gods are depicted to be proponents of Various forms of dance... Particularly Shiva`s Rudhra Thandavam has been told as the divine dance of cleansing.
For south Indians, Bharatham - dance had been heart & soul of their culture.
Wherever Tamil diaspora has been, there you find the culture adhered to very sincerely. But sadly, in TN, this is not really in vogue. We have become More Anglicised/ westernised in our language & culture... Our kids go to International schools, we speak "very stylised Tamil"...
Language & Culture have been reduced to Political tool!.We have embrased western values with an obscene pace, in process, being neither western nor eastern.
But, anywhere else in the world, Tamil seems to be in refreshingly nice form, though those societies have been more westernised.
Here I saw a local community function, with these girls performing fantstically. Ofcourse, It was not completely traditional. They were dancing for a popular general stream song. They were not very thorough in their steps or co-ordination. But, they were performing beautifully for such a small gathering...
I saw some thing in them which I see rarely back home - Pride about the culture & enthusiasm in performing their art.
I did a bit of contrast & saturation boosting with brightness in PP.

A nice statement about Tamil culture in Tamil Nadu and elsewhere... sad to find that it seems to be more lively outside India!
Regardless, that photo has extraordinary colors and a nice display of Indian group dance...
Good POV and framing
Well done.. and a good note

how true, once a Tamil leaves his country, he starts to see the real value of his roots and becomes nostalgique for their high traditional Tamil culture, he wants to go back !
You catched that idea very well in this shot, all ingrediants are there to know that this is not shot home but colors, proudness and joy are there, so many go visiting Tamil Nadu, so many miss this essence of the proud colors for joy and it becomes a crusade to make Tamils and visitors aware of this deep value endangered by Western world's publicity of a so called better world where lots of Tamil values are forgotten and lost for ever.
Try once a USM 18/40 in top duplicate layer opacity 50%, you will see what I mean.
kclai (2267) 2006-06-11 22:00
Cool shot of this traditional dancer, dressed up in such colorful attire and bending and twisting here and there. This is Indian Dance, gracefully carried out with emotion and impressing the crowds with oohh and aaahh.
Well, back to the contrast leveling in your image, probably you have overdone the contrast that left this image a little of the natural exposure. Seem a little over-lighted!
The saturation is good, on the traditional dresses but have casted the reddish effects on the faces of the performers.
Cheers and happy day, Prem.
chaity (1539) 2006-06-11 22:12
Hi Prem, I like the colorful costume and the close up shot. Really bring out the dancers in the clear and sharp shot.

a very interesting 'set piece' from the young women - colour and form. expression, technical ability in bucketfuls, physical stamina and flexibility and that wonderful inspiration and dedication that characterises Indian dancers ...I love the semingly incongruous guitar and drumset in the background...but having been to india a few times ....everything falls into place ......always.....
best wishes Kev

Good expression from the dancers. Colourful and its nice to see the modern instruments, behind them. Good coordination and postures of them. Would it be better from a different POV, may be from the front, so that you can capture the symmetry in their positions.
Thanx for sharing,
Dragonheart (8414) 2006-06-14 3:57

This is excellent, perfect timing to catch the mood. Great colours. Informative note as well. I agree with you, not only Tamils but most expat Indians feel the 'call of the root'. The pride and enthusiasm is writ large on their face.
bnallama (3763) 2006-06-15 11:27
Very thoughtful note with a very nice capture to go with it... Personally I thought the tamil and the calture was haveing a 'better life' in Malaysia than in TN. (I am from malaysia.)

jyraya (397) 2006-06-19 9:23
excellent colours in this picture.
I love the different postures of the women performing the dance.
My only problem is that the background is a little busy. but that is jsut a personal quirk.
satyapicmaker (111) 2006-06-22 20:28
I like the colors and the compo, little bit of APS to blur the background like the drumset, mike etc, will give this a great look. TFS

keribar (43841) 2006-07-22 15:33
Usually I am noıt a fan of taking pictures of shows when the background is not appropriate and intervenes with the subject. But here, I don't know how you managed to override this challenge, and the group is so lively that who cares about the background after all ?" Good-by for now - Izzet

Premanand. Something Indian outside of India. It's a great capture. Lots o motion, sharpness, and nice dancers. I liked your note. Of course, a neutral black or grey background would have taken this picture up several notches, but you accpet what you can find. Perhaps a different angle would have helped. Other elements are right on though. regards, c
vincz (19113) 2006-09-30 16:19
Excellent capture. So sharp, so colourful, so lively. They all seem to have so much fun doing this. Catched at the right moment : it lloks like their movement ended for just as second or two and you clicked right then. very good!

THY (1657) 2007-03-22 12:06
Colourful. Pretty ladies. Must be excellent show.
patelgm (117) 2007-03-31 3:10
Great snap. Expressions on the girls' faces are quite refreshing.
Your note aptly expresses your immense love towards the Tamil culture. I can understand your agony. Unfortunately, what you've narrated about Tamil culture & present day Tamilnadu fits more or less to all other languages & cultures of our great nation.
-Regards with best wishes.
