HAPPY MERDEKA DAY, MALAYSIA!
31 August is celebrated by Malaysians as Independence Day - Hari Merdeka. Independence from Britain was negotiated by Malaysian officials and finally came to fruition in 1957. The hand over was made in the Royal Selangor Club (situated on this square) on 30/31 August 1957 where the Union Flag was lowered and the new flag of Malaysia was raised.
I was fortunate enough to celebrate New Years Eve in this square along with thousands of other Malaysians. It was alot of fun and the Square (of which this fountain forms a part) was very beautiful and centrally located.

first an apology, I glanced at the title and thought it was "Meerkat Day" we have annoying adverts on TV here that extol the virtues of "comparing the market" for insurance. Sorry! This is a beautifully composed and executed night shot. Enticing lines, gorgeous detail and irresistible symmetry. It is flawless and a striking presentation.
Have a great weekend - regards Brian.

A well composed night time composition that uses the sweeping curve offered by the arches to great effect. Well exposed with interesting graphical lines and good depth. Have a good weekend.

I like a lot the yellow diagonal line in the picture that provide depth and movement. The colors are great. This is 30 seconds well spent.
Have a nice day

Complimenti e grazie!
Tanti saluti, buon fine settimana e buon mese,

Really perfect exposure, Lisa, creating a nice nighttime feel but with some brilliant light. The arc of the colonnade lends nice movement to the scene, and the bottom of the frame is nicely divided by the jagged edge of the pool running from the corner. Well-chosen POV.

Lots of points of interest here. The leading line of pillars AND the wavy lead line at the edge of the pool. The reflection on the water. The contrast between blues and yellows. the lights and exposure and that great sweeping almost neon yellow curve that structures the upper portion.

Hello dear Lisa,
Perfectly exposed and managed night shot. There are so many interesting features here but I like how the graceful sweep of the arc topping the columns leads us across to the zigzag pond which guides us back out. You did very well to have so few revellers.
Thanks for sharing, from drizzly London :)

Baci e abbracci

Dang, we could have used some Malaysians to help us negotiate in 1775.
A visual intrigue for the modern buildings with a semi classical column temple, with Greek and Egyptian influences, then total opposite - yellow neon top.
Interesting, and well done,

Very well taken night scene. I like the warm lights and the shapes of the architecture work. Well composed, your POV is excellent.
macjake (72535) 2012-09-01 10:59
you were fighting alot of difficult circumstances here.
this is a harsh scene to photograph over 30sec.
I guess its just a matter of personal taste, but i would have avoided this area all together for a blue hour photo shoot.
that yellow band in the fg has bright lighting which over a long exposure gets burnt out, but yet because of the dark natural light in the sky you NEED to have the 30sec to make the overall scene illuminated.
So you're damned if you do, or damned if you don't.
am i being too harsh lol, i feel like i'm in a Peter mood today lol
blue hours are very hard to execute, and the first thing i do is examine all the light fixtures and get an idea if the scene will end up burnt out - here i would have looked at Tosca and said...lets go somewhere else!
but dont get me wrong, i like the scene for the architecture and ambiance, its just hard to shoot in the blue hour, or at least in the LATE blue hour as you did here.
the compo is great, curves, tall buildings, and the zig zag coming out of the bottom right...all positives.
Sorry, I get sensitive about blue hours! you can ass kick me now! I'll bend over! lol

Ciao cara Lisa
Bellissima foto di questo colonato illuminato che crea un effetto di luce fantastico. Molto bello il riflesso sull' acqua. Incedibilmente nitida e dettagliata.

Ciao Bambina !!
a night shot with calm water ..... two of your favourite elements!!!
This is a very elegant image that transmits calmness & style.
Very well done.
Have a nice Sunday.
rmajum (1207) 2012-09-01 23:05
Well captured scene , in evening lights showing the nearby details and the calm water. The raised platform, for metro?,makes a graphical touch to the picture. Good sharpness and ample light making a good composition.
Noel_Byrne (33620) 2012-09-02 10:03
Wow, what a place to celebrate. And this is a fountain?? Wow, thats doing things to a grand scale indeed, I actually thought from the thumbnail that it could be a monorail. I love cool night shots like this (largely because I simply cannot do them) and this has that, beautiful colour, nice old style columns, and a great skyline. What more could one ask for!
abmdsudi (57672) 2012-09-04 8:28
Superb balanced framing, making use of the pillars and the yellow streak as strong visual elements and this encapsulates and enhances their prominence within this night shot. By moving in closer and adopting a more radical crop, you have achieved a far more intimate shot with great depth. Superbly exposed and the blend of colors and glows are attractive to the eyes and are a treat for the senses and the couple helps to create a very effective focal to the scene. This is a well planned compositon, clean shot without intrusion and the still water deserves observation as well, adding many different nuances and narratives to this image. A wonderful historic site worth recorded. Great shot, Congrats.

Hi Lisa ,we were just there just before the back events and parties ;=],this is lovely shot, because I found it very hard to make a decent photo in KL,strange because I like the town very much
i think youve done a good job with light management, well done Lisa!
mkamionka (39937) 2012-09-10 5:42
great geometry, there are so many lines and shapes here and of course captured in my favourite blue hour.
You have well selected the foreground to get also the reflection. Very impressive view. Pleasure to look at.
