I saw this little cutie pie at the festival at Batu Caves on New Year's Day. Her parents very kindly allowed me to take her photo. As to why her head is painted like this, I cannot tell you, perhaps one of our Indian friends can please let me know? As I said to her parents, she's the best souveneir of Malaysia I could possibly wish for.
My Workshop shows an alternative Point of View.

Hello Lisa: my neighbour today!
She is certainly a cutie-pie! I'm glad you asked her parents, as this shot was not to be missed. I also like the fact that she is not looking at you, but apparently engrossed in the proceedings. A good "candid", therefore. Nice one!

Hehehe! What a cutie pie indeed!
Two wonderful pictures for the price of one. Both in glorious bright colours and wonderful light and sharp as a tack. On balance, I actually think I prefer your workshop picture - those huge black googly eyes are just brilliant!
Not sure about the stuff on this little cutie's head - had it been in this part of the World, I should have thought it might be a treatment for ringworm or something like that, but I rather supsect it has a more religious or spiritual significance here.

Wow a great photograph! The point of view and aspect ratio are spot on. The depth of field is wonderful and the colors are great. Bravo!!

Hello dear Lisa,
This is a very nice shot of this cute girl. I tell you why .The head is shaven and smeared with sandalwood paste and the rite is performed either at home or in the temple before the age of four. It denotes purity and egolessness. It is very common among the non Brahmins. Nice image full of life.

She was cute. I am also wondering concerning her head. Some sort of sun protection perhaps. Very nice portrait.
Have a nice day

TFS

Not only a fine portrait of the exotic young girl but also the orange color dominates with more and red in the background.
In focus on subject and blur background.
Have another great one,

Beautiful capture of this girl as a souvenir from your Malaysian trip. I can't help you with but I think it has some religious significance with the arrival of the new year. I like the happy smiling face and the framing is beautiful.
Thanks and Happy Women's Day to you!

Ciao cara Lisa,
Nice cutie pie, one can see many kids like this in India, with their eyes painted. There are some reasons for it, but I do not remember what is the truth - to reflect light or against bad spirits. And this head painting is similar to the Burmese thanaka. The parents kindly allowed to take pictures? In Asian countries they are very happy about it, probably they are so proud of their kids, they thank you seeing you make photos.
Malgo (very itchy again)

ogni cultura ha i suoi modi e le sue tradizioni che a volte sembrano un po' eccessive forse.
Ottima la ripresa dove quel che conta è il sorriso splendido di questa bambina,

Good Morning Lisa,
No wonder you were inspired to capture this youngster; what a poppet! And, she is so unaware of the attention!
Good use of narrow dof to capture the sharp, textural details, yet provide a useful unobtrusive b/g.
Have a lovely day,
SteveH (6269) 2012-03-08 2:04
Hi Lisa, an interesting picture of a very different cultural experience than we have in Aus. For me this venture into portraits of yours is not as good as your landscapes. Thoughts on it: I wonder if getting down a bit lower, so that you weren't looking slightly down on the child would have been better, also cropping some of the other elements, shoes etc on the right putting her further off centre might have been better. That distracting hand part on the upper left could do with chopping too. Last thought, maybe also spot metering to overcome the blown out area on her head? Cheers, Steve

A good daily life scene from Malaysia of this adorable child. Excellent shadow detail & nice use of a narrow dof with perfect fg sharpness & a soft oof bg. Good color saturation & framing. I might try a workshop using levels on the highlights. Tfs!

Aaah, Lisa, A cutie certainly, great the folks gave permission, so difficult taking these without. You have captured her in a great pose, fantastic colours, pin-sharp, would be interesting to hear about the head paint.I think you did very well considering the time element with kids jumping about. Well done, Cheers Iain.
