Photographer’s Note

Kota Bahru is mainly a muslin town, located in Northeast Malasia. You go trough it, to get the paradise islands called Perhentian. Although most people only pass by, on the way to the islands, this small town is also a very interesting place to visit, filled with culture and tradition.
Among other things, the commerce here, is plentiful and lively. The town has several fascinating markets and this is one of them.

I always try to visit the markets everywhere I go, because it’s a privileged place to get a feeling of the people’s life and ways. Usually they are filled with colours and smells and it’s a party to our senses.

Back in 2000, I did not have a proper camera. Just an ordinary, automatic one. The light conditions were not good and of course I did not have a tripod.
Still, I decided to post this one, because I love the POV and the place, and I wanted to show it to you. I hope you like it.

Hi Ricardo, i scanned just 3 days ago an old image of the Octagonal Market of KB, but the quality is really poor, with few light and few colours.
that your image is better, perhaps with a light too strong, but was took from a good POV (first floor or second?) with good colours and a large view on the vegetables and fruits.
we went 3 times in KB, and i'm agre with you, is a nice city, a good place to have some relaxing days.

Bela perspectiva deste mercado cheio de cor e sabor e claro com a labuta diária dos seus vendedores.Para a camera que tinhas a foto foi bem conseguida,penso que talvez pudesses puxar uma pouco mais pela cor.

Quando vi esta foto, pensei que parecia uma grande salada de alface. hehehehe.
Gostei da orientação. Um ângulo muito simétrico teria ficado monótono. Tem muita coisa a passar no mercado. Gostei da tonalidade, faltou um bocadinho a definição. Mas, nada de grave. Bom trabalho meu amigo,

you are right about the POV ... THis is definitely one of the best POV I have ever seen of the vegetable market. even your composition with some boxes and people on the top left corner of the photo makes it a very incredible shot.

Hola Ricardo,

Although the picture lacks some sharpness I find it excellent as a composition, The market is so colorful and your picture renders it well. The diagonale you adapted is probably the best way to take this one.

it is not common to discover a market with such a PoV. I find it original and well framed wiht this diagonal makes by the central alley.
You show us how this place is nice and animated.

Salut Ricardo.
I am amazed by the size of each place and the varieties of vegetables on this market.
I agree with you. Visiting the markets you can smell and feel the life of a town. I do that each time it's possible during my trip. In the same time I hate the shops for tourist where the guides like to make visit tourists !!!

Olá Ricardo,
Após alguns atrazos no TE e depois de ir ao mercado vi esta sua obra que me despertou a atenção. Se fosse uma vista fotografica num Hiper só com camara escondida e bem no tecto mas não sei se conseguiria esta perspectiva. Prefiro esta feira de Espinho mais alinhada e em diagonal geometricamente bem distribuida e bem arrumada. Um ponto mais de contraste e de "Sharp" poderiam ainda dar um melhor resultado a esta excelente composição. Em Inglês "Great Eye Catch and Composition".

This is not too bad for an old scan, Ricardo, except that the highlights are blown out in a few places. Good POV to capture the colours and detail of the market. Although I have lived in Malaysia since 1997, I haven't been to KB yet - so you are one up on me :)

What I really like in your photo is the POV, you could focus on a big part of the market with an bird's eye so we can see a really busy daily life of this market. I've the same problems with my scanned photos,they lose a lot of quality.
