Fishing boats returning Pasir Hitam Photo

Photographer’s Note

Fishing boats and fishermen are my favorite photo subjects. I cannot find any other topic that is more enjoyable to shoot, the sea is a subject by itself and fishing nets provide good abstracts.

I think I'll start posting fishermen and nets photos until someone shouts "Oh no, not the fishing nets again"...

Anyway that's Pasir Hitam beach (I know that's redundant, in Melayu, pasir means "sands" to be understood as "beach"...). So that's "black sands/beach" beach...

This is truly an amazing shot, Luko. The DOF works well here. I like how these boats are scattered about the image. The nets also work well as the centerpiece of the whole composition. But the thing that I like most, as in a few of your other shots, are the muted colors. They don't jump out and scream at you, but work themselves deeper into the whole composition. And that lime green water bottle, the only screamer, is well positioned in the center of the shot. Well done!

PS: I won't get sick of nets...the more the better!

Well...fishing boats, nets and fishermen are one of my favorite photo subjects too...And this shot has great abience and atmospere...

(I'd crop at least half of the clouded sky which does not add to my opinion!)

This is another nice shot Luko. I really like the bottom half of the photo especially. I also think you have done well in difficult lighting(Highly reflective clouds). The sky is somewhat blown out, but that does not bother me much at all, as you have been able to bring out details in the boats and people. The positioning of the boats, etc is very, very good. You have done well with a somewhat random arrangement. Technically, I think the use of a grad filter of some sort (ND, blue, tobacco, etc) might have helped fight off the overexposure of the sky, and made it slightly more interesting. However, I believe thave even with the sky as it is, you were smart not to crop the photo down, as the balance would be somewhat off I think had you done that. I know you are using a rangefinder here Luko, and I don't know how easily a grad filter is to use with a rangefinder. It may be too difficult, as opposed to a TTL design.

nice image, I like those faded colors here - pieces of blue in the sky. nice cmpo, but could be even nicer if you included the whole stick with the blue cloth in the frame. Interesting that you took this shot vertically too... good stuff
