Introducing my hometown, Sibu.

Note:- 89th because Mom turns 89 this February, as my love and affection for her. Celebration mode. [in Chinese tradition, 89th means 90th for anniversary celebration, so I am not waiting for 90th post, in case you pop this question]

As mentioned elsewhere, Sibu originates its name from the fruit called 'Sibau' which is a wild version of local 'rambutan' fruit. Sibu is a town, and the capital of Sibu District (2,229.8 square kilometers) in Sibu Division, Sarawak, east Malaysia. It is located at the confluence of the Rajang and Igan Rivers, some 60 kilometers from the ocean. The population is dominated by Fuzhou Chinese as well as indigenous Melanau, Malay, and Iban. The district population (per year 2002 census) is 228,700. Wiki on Sibu here.

The only town in this world where you will find city streets being planted with sidewalks, planter boxes and green plants. Many road dividers and planter boxes in the one-way streets, you can only experience it here. And where motorists have to wait and give rights of way to motorcycles, pedestrians and bicycles [the latter now no longer popular]. All drivers must be fully alert and be patient when you drive in the town.

This sunshine morning photo shows part of 1-way city street and open space converted into sidewalk and planted with trees. And you can clearly see the motorcycle and pedestrian crossing the road where a white car is going by slowly. Many visitors find it hard to drive here without bumping into accidents. You need to know the mentality of the road users, not according to traffic rule books.

I hope you now know a bit more about this hometown. Critiques and comments most welcome.

Regards, Bill

Hi Bill,
The lovely blue sky with its wispy clouds contrast wonderfully with the lush green palms that are seen in remarable details and sharpness. The rush hour traffice gives this image a warm busy feel.
Regards, Tom

Very sharp photo with refreshing colours of building in the BG, blue sky. Very pleasant view.

Hello Bill,

What a beautiful hometown, there is plenty of greenery which is good to see. I like the green saturations in the palm fronds; all too often foliage can be dark and unnatural but here it is accurately captured. The people in this photo give the scene a liveliness as they all seem to be enjoying the beautiful weather. It seems to be a wonderful environment to live, work and play in. Your fame is excellent, it is creative but not overdone that it would distract from the scene. Great job, hope to travel here someday.

Hi Bill,

Great one! Excellent presentation of you city. The depp is incredible, the composition including palm trees, car and people is really nice. The sky is perfct and the colors are great. Your city looks a tropical paradise! Did you use a special lens for this one?

Cheers,

Flavia

Hello Bill,
I think your style become more and more good. I hadn't time for TrekEarth in the last months, but now I discover again your gallery and there are some very good pictures. I like the sence of city life in this one. The light seems a bit too bright, I saw in the note that picture is taken in the morning and I just suppose that because of the latitude of your country the light conditions are more diifficult.
Greetings from Bulgaria
Silvia

Hello Bill,
J’aimerais beaucoup voir en Belgique les rues agrémentées de jolis palmiers comme chez vous !
Hélas, ce n’est pas le même climat ici :o(
En tout cas, très bon point de vue et très belles couleurs,
Bien cordialement,
Robert

Hi Bill, your note is specially useful - with some delay (as I was travelling), please convey my best wishes to your grandmother for her birthday !
I am happy to see a photo of Sibu about which I heard when I was working as a French speaking tour guide in Malaysia for 10 months (including Sarawak, but we never went farther than the Skrang river...) - Other photos of the same place are welcome !
Best regards,
Cath.

Dear Bill,
You are beginning to be the defacto photographer for Sarawak at TE. Most photographers are still into showing how good they are at photography. You aren't. You are more interested in showcasing your subjects, the best you can without showing yourself in the way.

Hi Bill,
Indeed a very lovely day for this shot. I like the nice colours you have here and the good clarity. The cyclist and the car coming forward is another good consideration.By backing up a little and zooming in might help reduce the distortion typical of wide angles. Well done!!

Regards and thanks for the WS. Much appreciated.
