Fishing [for Latiff] Photo

Photographer’s Note

I dedicate this post to Latiff who is embarking on another journey soon. When Jusni came to Kuching, we met him at this place for 2hrs of shooting. With only 70-300mm lens, I tried my best for something different than wide angle, and here tried for the silhouette of the anglers fishing on the old wharf. I had never tried fishing in this place, perhaps one day I would do so when the next person comes to shoot/visit. The fishing normally starts after work, so evening hours are breezy and cooler. If you can see the flat top of the mountain at the left, that is Mount Singai where each Sunday my dog Dude will follow my trekkgroup to ascend the summit of 560m ASL. Dude is fast becoming a star there. If you are physically fit, book your Sunday trek and let Dude take you up there.

Should I say Kuching sunsets are 1st class? Perhaps I may biased if I say Sibu sunsets are world class because that is my hometown but the Rajang River is really very impressive in the evenings. Kuching is not far off. If you have a slightest dream to come here, please note the routes to take.

Airlines - AirAsia, Malaysia Airlines, SilkAir, TigerAir, Jetstar.

Entry points - Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Kota Kinabalu, Johor Bahru, or Singapore connecting to Kuching.

You can fly vide HK, Bangkok, Siem Reap, Bali, Hanoi, Macau.

Length of stay in Kuching - at least 3-5 days
Ongoing to World Heritage sites of Mulu or lodge inns

Favorite things to do - local food delicacies, cultural visits, longhouses, forests, beaches.

Hello Bill

A beautiful composition...just a few things to observe..the bottom left looks a bit cluttered because of structures jutting out...that interferes with the silhouettes..maybe you could have pushed further left...and secondly

The distant boat should have been on the right side of the compositon..you should waited for another 10 minutes maybe..the compo would have been relly balanced..would have been in concurrance with the rule of thirds..would have balanced the composition.

Also you could have pushed the aperture to f11-f16...with a 1 second ..given the light condition..F4 has cut out the details of the waves etc

But liked it overall :) have a great week ahead brother

Hello Bill,
I like the idea of the dark silhouettes against the sunset of very special "fleeting" beautiful colours.
But composition-wise, it seems to me that there is too much dark colour at the bottom (it looks too "heavy"), and maybe it would be better to crop a little of the bottom? Well, I don't know, it's just my idea.... I also thought of making the photo square (but it means cropping part of the right side).
Concerning the boat on the left, I agree with Sayeed's suggestion.
In any case the photo is very interesting and awakens creativity ;)

uma bela captura aqui mesmo, com uma tonaliadde muito bonita no céu. Gostei das silhuetas dos pescadores também, mas achei a iagem um pouco inclinada pra esquerda.

Hi Bill,

This is top drawer sunset with beautiful silhouettes of the fishing activity going on at the dockyard. I have one captured with my 50mm but not as good as this. The glow along the horizon was brilliant that day and thanks for sharing this with us. The note is a good promo for Kuching and all the best to Latiff on his journey to another phase/place in life.

Seem like an interesting location for fishing, except fishing we can admire colorful sunset too, I suggest to add more sharpness to this photo, not enough sharp preview with old monitor(Samsung SyncMaster 793MG).

Hi Bill. I like fishing almost as much as taking photos ;-). Great photo, wonderful sunset colours. I love the critical focus on the fishermen and their rods and how that contrasts with the softer BG. Excellent work and thanks for sharing.

hi Bill,
the only two things I might want to adjust is the left edge and f-stop. cropping a little from the left would take away the part of the structure protruding into the scene. as to the depth of field - the mountains in the background could use some focus. other than that, I don't think I'd change a thing. I like the boat in the distance, I like the corner of the dark silhouettes and fishing poles, cropping those would take away the story of the shot. the touch of colour in the sky is a great accent, good timing to capture this.

Hi Bill,

The fishermen in the foreground have an effect of scale. The pont of view takes our eyes toward the mountains in the background which is giving depth to the photo. The sunset is giving nice colors to the sky, the sea and a set of shadows to other areas of the picture. have a nice day.

Good capture of silhouettes of anglers in very limited time under technical difficulties. I liked silhouettes of mountains too in shallow focus while the spectrum of sky increasing your already beautiful photo's value. Wonderful, congratulations.

An excellent theatre of shadows as you have captured the scene at Kuching. The off centre capture has allowed a great view of the dusk colors and mood. Really impressive

Thanks for the dedication. Sorry, I haven't been coming to TE lately. Many more months to go before my next trip (Sept 2 till Oct 10). I'll respond to everything in an email to you soon. It's difficult to critique this photo from my new laptop. It appears best when I lower my head down to get the dark and sharp silhouettes for the FG and the tree line on the shore while still showing a distinct layers of light and colors. I like those intense orange, red and yellow of the sky. Got to get used to my notebook and find the best combination of head and screen angle. Otherwise I'm not seeing photos the way they are meant to be seen. Thank for the calibration guide. I haven't tried it yet but I will when I start editing photos again. Regards. Latiff

it is a very fascinating composition and a very ambivalent one: so quiet and peaceful but also dynamic at the same time. I agree that the sunset has a quality we can only dream of in the Northern hemisphere. The colors and the light are amazing. Congratulation!

Hi Bill

There are many photographs of sunset on TE, but in my opinion your photograph is different. The sunset in combination with these sitting angling men gives different sensation. I like this composition in your performance.
...
Probably you live in a beautiful place, but in my opinion a bit dangerous :-)))
Why ? Look at the photo ...
I think, that this mountain with cutting top on the horizon is a volcano. Maybe it's an extinct volcano but still a VOLCANO :-)
