Photographer’s Note

Two Sea Bajau boys barely 5 years old posing by a fish trap off an island called Maiga, off the coast of Semporna in the east coast of Sabah.

It's Sunday morning almost everyday to these Sea Bajau children. In the morning, would see these children wading in their backyard hunting for crabs and fishes, left behind in tidal pools by the ebbing tide.

Most of them couldn't go to school. The Sea Bajaus are mostly stateless and without citizenship and the papers that go with it, they don't have documents that permit them to attend school or employment.

I like how you captured a lot of light on the two children and how they standout in against a very contrasting background. I think the framing is a little too centered.

Hi Bani,

This is really something new to me. I thought the Bajau's are naturally Bumiputeras as there are categorized as the natives of the land. Why is it so they do not possess any documents or given any documentation by our government?

I like the title. But mostly I like the carefree smiles of these children in the surrounding of true nature. Every child is born to swim at sea. The life cycle of these people is simply sleep, eat and play. Material things mean nothing to them.

Very well captured for the color and contrast and at child's eye level. tfs
