Photographer’s Note

Finally, after months of planning and training, it was holiday time at the islands off the east coast of Semporna, Sabah. Our group of 5 would love to stay longer at Kapalai island to do snorkeling activity and just glazing at the undersea world, if not due to high noon heat and hunger. But mostly it was due to low tide where the sea bed was almost going dry and all fish gone to deeper ends of corals. Therefore by 1.50pm we approached Mabul island's village side and this was a fine day for villagers going out for fishing, as seen here from this shot taken from our boat nearing the shore. Really, it was the color theme of the sea water, sky and clouds that urged my shutter when this boat passed by with 2 red men on it. Believe it or not, if you step out of the boat here at this spot, the water level would probably be just about up to your chin. For miles around with such kind of scenery, do you think you would pay a visit here?

hi Bill,
fantastic colours, I love the deep blue of the polarized sky and the clear turquoise water. I like a lot the colour accent the red clothes of the fishermen create, the minimalism in the composition works very well. but there's something strange about the clouds, especially the gray part that looks like separate pixels, and the horizon seems a bit concave. but I have to say that looking at that amazing water makes me forget everything else in the shot :)

p.s. seems that the photo was rotated and there's still a bit of black canvas left at the top. it doesn't bother me though :)

The red details - men - and the boat with the reflection are also something special in this picture of yours!

Hi Bill,

Emerald colored sea with two visitor in red on boat are really eye catcher. Your perfect fixing of ratio with sky is adding great value to your view. Oil platform at background really creates a paradox in the middle of this beauty. Sky with multi layer of clouds are amazing, congratulations.

les couleurs sont vraiment magnifiques ici. Malgré que les bleus dominent, ils sont bien variés.

Hi Bill,
A well composed image where you have placed the boat with fishermen well in the frame, it's good also that that have red clothes for the color contrast. The overall impression is a bit dark, you micht want to try some lightening techniques to get the full potential of this image, sorry no time for WS today...

Ah, this is nice, great contrast in a beautiful setting. Yes i would pay a visit here, it really looks beautiful. The combination with the emerald green water and the deep blue sky on top is truly wonderful...seems a great place to visit.
Technical speaking you forgot something to remove on the top left, but that's just a detail.

I love the exotic colours of Malaysia and in her they simply superb. The water is really very inviting but that oil/gas production platform may spoil it in many ways. Otherwise, your photo is very good with the red shirts being a truly eye catchers. Well done.

Bill,
despite the simplicity of the moment you turned it into a great composition with the fishing boat to the left and the oil platform in the far right background. That balances the image extremely well and still makes the fishing boat the anchor for the eyes.
Three little details that could improve the image even more would be the sharpness, the lens distortion at the horizon and the finally the contrast in the sky with the clouds that you manipulated.

I like a lot the colour accent the red clothes of the fishermen create.

The colors are quite astonishing in this image from Sabah. The low vantage point you've chosen for the photograph gives the impression of viewing a mirror at a grazing angle. The red shirts worn by the two boatmen, comprise an excellent highlight to the cool colors of the water and sky. Warm regards,

Bonjour,
belle photo de ce plan d' eau de toute beauté.
Cette barque avec ces pecheurs, frèle embarquation ou ces gens restent des heures pour ramener du poisson pour faire vivre leurs familles.
Du moins si il y a encore du poisson, car au loin on distingue une plate forme de forage si je ne me trompe Pas.

The scene is outstanding no doubt about it. However the post processing is not that successful I'm afraid. The white clouds look unreal and annoying, and I think the contrast could be pushed a bit to brighten the colours.
Check my WS to see an alternative version.

Hi Bill,

The contrast between the color of the sky and the color of the sea are assets to the composition. The point of view leads our eyes to the horizon and is giving depth to the photo. The presence of the fishermen has an effect of scale. The ligh as a great effect on the colors. Have a nice day.

Semporna in Sabah! Let me write it in the top of my wish list of places to go. I'll put it in the section "Those places that are so gorgeous that we find hard to believe that they exist out of travel documentaries". I like the minimalism, just a great expanse of clear water of a colour that render us crazy, two reed shirts, deep blue sky and some clouds. Brilliant!
I find the clouds strange. Is that natural?

I liked this pov, the colors are amazing and the light is beautiful too. I think the men are nicely put in the scenery while the oil-well is nice for the compo too. The colors of the water are amazing. I think there is something strange in the clouds, some of them are a little grainy
