Photographer’s Note
"I started my bisness here as a newspaper vendor about 15 years ago" said Lai Ah Kow, the shop owner. It's located in Jalan Elopura, Sandakan. For me this is a unique shop because there is many things inside, like a minimarket. Once you stop here you can get what ever you one, I hope.

We only started to notice this mom & pop stores when Goliathic store opens up, endangering the trading species of yesteryears. The little store that can. Like you said Zul, you can get almost whatever you want. Probably because the towkay gets it for you. Now, you can't even get the salesgirl to show you what the megastore has.Let alone get it.

This kind of shop is called Ottu Kedai. It's first originated from Tamil Nadu where it was located near the jetty for convenience of the worker who lives nearby. When the Indian moved to Malaysia, they brought along with them their Ottu Kedai culture. Later, the local and the Chinese imitated this idea because it saves space.
