It was no Sunday Picnic.
And the Likas Bay was no picnic area either to the boatmen of the Sabah International Dragon Boat race conducted yesterday. And the drive along the beach offshore, they didn't see much where they were going. It was just a faint line 800m away with the Tun Mustapha Building as a landmark of sort, in the northern distance. The oarsmen, they were just biological pistons inside the belly of an articulated wooden dragon. In fact they didn't care much where they were going. All they care about in that dragon boat, is to get to the finishing line 800m away, before the other dragon boats. All they have to do was dig deep their oars and push their dragon boat forward. All 18 of them, in synch with the beating of the drummer astern.
An annual event, the Sabah International Dragon Boat Race is hold in June in Likas Bay, about 10 minutes drive from Kota Kinabalu. Participants came as far as China to grab the multiple trophies and price monies offered.
If you are interested to shoot this event, either get yourself at least a 400mm lens or get yourself a boat to get close. The nearest racing lane to the beach is about 200m off shore.
To shoot this photo, the hired boat went parallel and travel at the same speed as the dragon boat. You need to be a little bit behind and far enough from the dragon boat to keep your wakes from getting to them. |

Well captured at the decisive moment and the frozen action by water drops, TFS.
The small splash of the water flying through the air are clear and well seen. Your fast exposure works well here and i like their expression of striving hard to win. Nice shot.
Excellent capture, I can see the effort in their expressions and the water droplets, I also like the surprising urban highrisies in KK in the bg. I will be arriving in Malaysia next week, but this year I do not have time for Borneo, maybe in the future, I would love to visit.
My current plan is Singapore-Pulau Tioman-KL-Langkawi-Penang-Medan and on to Indonesia after that.
