[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
A ferrata trekker on a section of the Via Ferrata on Panar Laban Rockface with the view facing east and the Mesilou Plateau in Kundasang. Faintly below, the long roof is Gunting Ligadan, a hostel at Laban Rata, the base camp at 3200m ASL. This section of the ferrata is about 3600m ASL, 400m above the base camp.

To shoot or trek the ferrata, I would suggest the Low's Peak Circuit and recommend you do the summit before 7am. From the summit, it takes around 30 minutes to walk down to the Via Ferrata starting point at Km 7.5 where your handler will be waiting for you.

You need to sling your camera around you as you need both hands to drag "walk" your lanyards' carabiners along the safety line and reclipping it on the next section. Make sure your camera strap has just enough slack to reach your face but not dangling loosely. The wind can be buffeting and you have to "embrace" certain sections of the rockface. Also, the abrasive sandpaper nature of Granite always win against glass, magnesium alloy or plastic. Or your skin. Best you put on your glove too, the type golfer wears.

Stick to one lens during the via ferrata. Recommended lens is wide to medium zoom (16 -100mm) and don't bother changing lens. Can be pretty tricky with the buffeting winds and with all those ropes around you. Mishandle your lens and you would find it in thousands of pieces 400m below.

Why F/8 and shutter speed at 1/2500s?
F/8 is considered to be a "sweet spot" for definition with only marginal improvement above it. Furthermore, with that aperture, it gives me just the shutter speed I need to freeze everything (including my shaking hand) that was fluttering, shaking and flapping during that jet stream howling windy morning that day.

Have fun. For all its vertigo creating sceneries along the via ferrata, you are much safer anywhere on the route than on any street in Kota Kinabalu or Kuala Lumpur. Or New York, London for that matter. Even if you slipped and the unlikely chance both your carabiners failed or broke, your handler is behind you to pull you back.

On the other side of fear, is fun.

Rabani, very useful Note and surely one of great significance for Sabah Tourism, and for outdoor lovers particularly mountain trekkers.

You have done a great job climbing up and taking a series of shots, knowing how difficult it would be.

I wonder, your fitness must be very tiptop for this shooting trip? Regards, bill

Hi Bani,
I love this series of your posting, very informative and illustrative. Admire your stamina and gut in trying out this route. Very tempted to try but I think I will faint dangling in mid air at 3600m AMSL!

alfred

Assalamualaikum Rabani,
Law of Physics obeyed through the use of centrifugal force? Beautiful straight stance of the climber on an acutely slanting slope. The view down there is just gorgeous. It's like being on a window seat minus the windows to fell the freshness of the high altitude thin air. Beautiful composition of a beautiful climber.
Wasallam.
