Please don't rate this image. This is a CGI or Computer Generated Image of a certain part of Sabah, looking toward north.
This screenshot you see is a 3D "image" of the upper westcoast of Sabah, as seen from the air over Kinarut. No...this "photo" wasn't taken when I was flying or hovering over Sabah. And by the way...the mountain on top right, that's Mount Kinabalu.
It is an image generated using Landsat satellite imagery and Shuttle Radar Topography Mission data. Using this application, you can fly by just about anywhere on this planet. As most of us don't have private plane or helicopter, alternatively this virtual technology gives us an aerial feel or "location awareness" of where you lived or going, right from your desktop PC.
Tell you what, all this mumbo jumbo wouldn't come to much if you don't try this for yourself. Log on or browse to NASA and study how this cool technology works.
You can also download for free a 70MB application which you use to browse or "fly over" just about anywhere on this planet. Just don't expect real time high or "car's license plate" definition as seen on TV. But it is good enough really, to feel "flying" over around where you lived or wanted to go. Or anywhere else for that matter.
This application is a lot like Google Earth but...tell you what, see for yourself what happened when you drag the map of your area with either the right or left mouse. You would be amazed almost charmed. Flying around at the tip of your finger...with your mouse of course.
And just like Google Earth, you need to be onlined for it to retrieve the topographic data from NASA.
I know this photo is not a real photo coming from a camera, but as Trekearth is about learning the world through photography, I thought I share with you, the other things which I used during my phototreks. Satellite navigation and imaging.
Have fun Learning And Seeing The World. |

Hello Rabani,
Quite a surprising image to put on Trekearth, but nevertheless very helpful, thanks to your generous information. You always gives a lot of details and I really appreciate.
André
Argh, no Mac OS support for this app. :-(
Thanks bani, another useful information from you!
