Also located at the highest point of the Akha village I've been showing lately, there's two huge swings that are very scenic and imposing, since they are seen from everywhere.
These structures are used for special ceremonies, but the only use I saw during the 24h I spent there, was by the children. Early in the morning and late afternoon they practiced for hours, trying to reach the top, using only the arms, which was pretty impressive. Only the older ones were strong enough to make it to the top, but all of them tried the best they could. I guess that this is their open air gymnasium :)
In WS1 and WS2 there are complementar images of the two swings against the colors of the sunset.
This is my last post for a while, since the day after tomorrow, I'm going for a week to the center of Portugal.

excellent composition and catch of this playful moment. The light and concentration on the watchers faces are perfect.
Estelle (2766) 2008-02-12 4:51
You chose the right title for this picture. I like this point of view.
I think these kids have much healthier activities than the western kids and their Nintendo DS!
This wooden stick makes us look at the different levels of backgrounds on your picture: first the kids, second the local houses, 3rd 4th and 5th the 3 level of mountains.
lestans (17162) 2008-02-12 4:51
what a skilly composition using the diagonal so well in a so rich scene!
Very interesting picture and very well done
chiaretta (2414) 2008-02-12 4:52
Very beautiful cmposition!!!
Colors are soft and emphatizes the silouette on the up-left. The guide lines of the woods are excellent!!!
Valerka (8171) 2008-02-12 4:53
A delightful shot against the BG of the sunsetting light.
These boys are so deep in their enjoyment.
Tue (35420) 2008-02-12 5:38
Beautiful photo on a great time of day. The sunset colours in the background are beautiful, just as the layered hills. The silhouettes look nice in the foreground with the child in the swing and the others looking at him. Excellent (vertical) composition too. Thanks for sharing!
Have a nice trip to central Portugal!
Mateja (434) 2008-02-12 5:53
very beautiful photo of those children playing, with the great background of the hills and the sun. Nice soft light and nice composition.
totoamoto (1569) 2008-02-12 5:58

I want to contribute to the joy and happiness of children.
Everything is perfect :)

Great timing, wondrous.
All the best.

Excellent exotic photo with superb lights/shadows controll.
carper (96) 2008-02-12 9:37
It is a good one Ricardo,

parbo (11092) 2008-02-12 10:59
Beautiful capture full with actions and colors. I like your catch while young player busy at top of pole. Of course splendid sunset colors and silhouettes of mountains in color of spectrum is great. Congratulations.
berek (49804) 2008-02-12 12:54
nice background light with interesting activity. I like it my friend.
devimeuxbe (58557) 2008-02-12 14:11
beautifull picture. The situation of the child is unusual. the sky behind is great. It's a lovely situation captured with a nice timing.
paura (47186) 2008-02-12 15:30
bostankorkulugu (42424) 2008-02-13 0:10
this is one of the best from your laos series ric... the light is superb here, taken at the right time it think... very moody... very nice...
JCG (35129) 2008-02-13 0:28
The buddies of this little boy seem impressed by his exploit… Pretty catch of sight of this scene with in bottom this splendid sunset. Beautiful management of the lights which once again gives an excellent back-light on these mountains. Beautiful photograph and thank you for those in complement.
With all my friendships and I wish you a good trip in your area, so long,
hatti52 (12786) 2008-02-13 0:44
excellent composition with wonderful colours
great light management
tehanu_f (6896) 2008-02-13 1:08
Superb subject and bg. The graphics and the sunset colours add a lot to the scene. Very well done.
Graal (102642) 2008-02-13 1:56
good caught moment, fine scene during the sunset time. I like the photos in WS also. Nice 3 images.
Paolo (41222) 2008-02-13 2:20
Hi Ricardo, excellent one, with the child that was climbing to the sun!
good composition, with a well managed light and beautiful pastel tones on the sky.
AiresSantos (56155) 2008-02-13 2:30
ChrisJ (112461) 2008-02-13 2:33
Superb graphism & silhouettes, with impeccable sharpness & good colour. A marvellous daily life scene fron Laos. The sunset makes a nice backdrop. Tfs!
delkoo (68) 2008-02-13 3:57
it's not very sharp , but the silhouette is very well rendered, I definitely like your POV in this shot , great moment
Cara (2059) 2008-02-13 4:31
Have a nice evening for you
josepmarin (58357) 2008-02-13 12:09
Diverte-te.
vincz (19113) 2008-02-14 1:33
Such a wonderful late light at sunset time. You got so many good details in the draker parts. This is very nice. Above all this boy having fun climbing makes the scene so unique. A great picture.
papagolf21 (99860) 2008-02-14 2:00
Bonjour, cher Ricardo,
danos (96842) 2008-02-14 2:25
really this is an open gymnasium for these children.Their faculties in the climbing are tried with this way, if they do not have the games that they have the children of western world.Excellent the snapshot, with these great sun and the clouds that make the scene so memorable.Informative your note too.
belido (19934) 2008-02-14 5:31
keribar (43841) 2008-02-14 10:15
Hello Ricardo, I wish I had some more favorites for this one. Excellent in all ways . I am out of town and it snows here.
When you find a moment could you kindly tell me about some places I should not miss if I organize a trip to Laos.
Many thanks Hugs and rrrrr
siolaw (38292) 2008-02-14 11:43
Excellent compo with a special mention fro the framing! The top left corner has nice geometry, the kid's silhouette is well captured, the backlight still let us see the details on the floor with looking children and village. The the layered hills and sky are a superb BG.
sleon (9402) 2008-02-14 12:32
This shot is so full of atmosphere. These light conditions must have been tricky but the exposure is good, and the compo excellent - the movement of the climbing boy is really dynamic and all our attention is on him, thanks to the other 3 watching him. Lovely capture of a decisive moment.
manatee (4668) 2008-02-14 17:20
Stepan (27210) 2008-02-14 22:52
It's obvious you had good moments there... The serie is simply cool and expresses you were ok at that time. Simplicity and harmony...
Burberry1 (6041) 2008-02-14 22:55
This is a real scene, so realistic and beautiful in one.
Everythink seems to be perfect here: cadrage, tones, light and I like that it is so vivid, dynamic.
Friendly regards, Agnieszka
ruisc_pt (10892) 2008-02-15 0:25
John_F_Kennedy (43665) 2008-02-15 4:52
Lovely shot full of colour and good light. Well detailed and its a very special composition.
banyanman (7789) 2008-02-15 7:05
This is an absolutely superb shot, Ricardo. Framing, POV, light management are all excellent, as is your PP to bring out a little bit of detail in the foreground. The WS1 with the two swings is a great composition too, and would have been worthy of a main post as well, but this one is certainly the best as the inclusion of the kids brings it to life. Enjoy your week away. Cheers . . . David
jhm (151570) 2008-02-16 0:39
Also your WS1 and WS2 are very nice.
The small acrobat is here the real eye catcher.
I think these kids have much healthier activities than the western kids, this is as then I an young kid was, without all the electronic games.
Very well composition and pleasant for look it.
Thanks for sharing.
Have a nice weekend,
Clairedelune (4923) 2008-02-16 12:56
A pleasing photo, no doubt about it! A photo where the light was surely not easy to deal with, the strong light of the sun, and the kids in the half-light of the end of the day. So, I am quite pleased to see that there is not too much burnt sky and that we can still see details in the darker areas.
The subject is interesting, with these kids playing monkeys. And the colors are nice too. Though you had nothing to do with it, the red shirts are the best. Very beautiful background with the roofs of the small houses and farther, the different layers of the mountains.
Now, my only complaint would be the half-kid on the left side of your photo. I really wish you had included him in your frame.
Out of curiosity, did you try some frames in being closer to them?
I hope you week to the center of Portugal was good! Enjoy your free time!
alainh (33201) 2008-02-18 8:14
splendid capture. the perfect angle and timing !
a master piece, i think.
a nice evening for You
sacavem (18620) 2008-02-18 16:19
Henryk_Bilor (20799) 2008-02-21 2:29
Excellent capture of this contest against the beautiful sky at sunset. Great composition and light.
Have a nice day
rbcy1974 (20758) 2008-02-21 3:36
Very ncie composition divided into two planes. There is the kids playing in the foreground and the beatuiful sunset on the background.
Really well done
pablominto (53746) 2008-02-21 3:41
This looks like fun!
Nothing is like playing with an element of risk, that is challenging for the kids and helps them preparing for the grown-up life...
I don't like so much what I see nowadays, with huge helmets and all kinds of protection for a bikeride only!
noborders (1010) 2008-02-23 9:30
The subject of the photos is great of course and you found a great title - I like the kids below who watch the scene, maybe slightly too dark although we still can distinguish them ; on the other hand, the sky, the faint smoke and the silhouette are so good, this is so much better than a regular sunset photo, something great is happening here !
(WS photos are great too, but for me it is the kids that make the photo special !)
I guess that you are now back from your break and look forward to seeing more photos soon !
Best regards and have a great weekend,
adores (45029) 2008-02-26 16:23
brevbrev14 (140) 2008-02-27 9:53
Hola Ricardo, very good image and moment captured!
i like a lot the action here..
great warm light
xuaxo (6846) 2008-02-27 11:55
delic (6735) 2008-02-27 12:41
Truly a decisive moment shot for many reasons. Very good composition, Ricardo. Just wish the boy on the left was fully visible. Foreground looks OK on my Mac monitor but some selective brightening wouldn't hurt.
Partha_c (2029) 2008-02-28 1:01
Hi Ricardo. Beautiful concept of conquest at sunset. The vertical and slant poles made me remember some trgonometric lessons I learnt in schools -- not acrobatics! Well taken with a nice perspective. Regards.
jmcl (14535) 2008-02-28 17:29
beautiful light and tone .. wonderful mood of childhood joy as the day draws to a close .. very nice sense of place.
patdeph (35748) 2008-02-29 12:45
I like this picture very much! This is superbly framed, with a nice and funny situation! The children seem to look at this one who is climbing with much admiration! The colours of the sky are somptuous, and I like the layers of the mountains!Wonderful!
Have a nice evening.
Angshu (56750) 2008-03-03 1:09
Maybe the best in the Lao series so far, but that's my personal opinion. The light has been handled with expertise here, especially since it's not easy with stronger light at the top part & shadows in the lower half. Not only the poise of the kid hanging, but also the layers of mountains in the BG. An intriguing post...only nitpick about the half of the kid on the left..but I guess you had to take the shot in a hurry to compose mainly with the swinging kid. Good work my friend!
alvaraalto (10796) 2008-03-03 3:47
Lovely picturesque scene. There is a lot to admire at this picture. Of course the climbing boy, but the way the other children are looking at him. And the layered background of the mountains.
fabio_ts (13696) 2008-03-05 8:24
I've missed many beautiful pictures in the last year, this one is great,
a superb light for a stunning picture, great in all details, excellent work!!
marietom (34609) 2008-03-05 16:09
flory (4848) 2008-03-05 22:19
like their acrobatic time and this is for me the real sense of childhood.Games,Playing,Enjoying..:)more healthy than video games.
o,yes, they had successed to win the sky and those beautiful layers ...and i'm sure that the time don't have value.
well taken the whole scene, against the sunset light.
Bluejeans (64251) 2008-03-06 11:55
Oi Ricardo ,
Photo65Net (43120) 2008-03-07 1:16
Superb exposure control in this one, as the sky is just a little overexposed, and you caught beautiful tones and details on the playing kids.
Nice and informative post,
Rosa (0) 2008-03-08 1:38
bakes888 (18499) 2008-03-13 0:22
Hi Ricardo. Action shot or sunset? Nice combination of the two I think. You have handled the light well to retain good detail in the shadows. Thanks for sharing.
coco (30439) 2008-03-20 2:55
Hi again Ricardo.
Perhaps this one is among your best photos. The moment, the timming and the light are wonderful.
Thanks for sharing.
Gierlinski (948) 2008-03-21 12:03
Well done. The half in half silhouette composition works here excellent. The two workshops you posted are also very interesting. The light is great. Did you use ant orange/tobacco filter or is the colour natural?
Well done, 2 strong points for this composition here.
jonathan_hart (21276) 2008-03-24 12:38
fantastic composition, colours, action captured, POV adn framing seem perfect
sloomatic (60) 2008-03-27 15:00
Tobias__Ortmann (2638) 2008-04-04 4:11
what a shot great colours
I like the pov and the composition also the moment you captured is very good
thanks alot for sharing
I like your gallery my friend
rajiv_077 (1412) 2008-04-05 3:35
This type of scene is hard to find and sometime we find so hard to capture. But you done both. Playing boys create this image more dynamic, silhouette and background color is superb.
Another great picture of yours.
kevinos (7517) 2008-04-17 21:52
You have a lovely image, in the fading light, Ricardo. The The composition, using the strong angles and the pool of light is really fresh and interesting. Regards Kevin
Jonas_Schmitt (3074) 2008-06-11 9:52
Great picture, what a fantastic scene, this daily life shot is amazing.
Also the Workshops, very well done. Also brilliant colors, excellent composed and fantastic point of view. Thanks for the informative note, well done!
NMaverick (0) 2008-06-12 9:37
Hi Ricardo, impressive climbing from the little kid. He is climbing without being afraid of the height, this reminds me when I was his age when I climbed tall trees that now I am afraid to even think of it!
Nice POV and framing, mate.
pastadog (13111) 2008-08-01 0:50
Certainly an unique compo, Ricardo, with the top part giving the unusual sight, and the bottom providing the local touch... Regards, Daniel
