Photographer’s Note

Picture of Vietnamese Phật Tích Temple on Nongbone Road, Vientiane, Laos.
Vietnamese community in Laos developed early. During the French dominance, due to hardship in life and affected by the great deadly famine when 2 million people are estimated to have starved to death, many people of central Vietnam have abandoned their fatherland to migrate to and resettle in Laos. Besides, a good amount of officials and soldiers serving the French military have been relocated to this country plus businessmen searched for opportunity in a new country.
Today, there are more than 70,000 Vietnamese living in Laos, mostly in large provinces like Vientiane, Champassak, Savanakhet and Khammuon.
In Morning Market or Khua Din Market you can find up to 90% stalls belonging to Vietnamese. Here in the capital of Vientiane, Vietnamese community has their own Catholic Church or Buddhist temples, and Phật Tích temple in this shot is just one.
