Photographer’s Note
A group of young monks sets up the pre-noon meal at Wat Hai Sok.
Buddhist monks eat only two meals a day, an early breakfast and a larger meal in the late morning.

Mr. Trips: you've been away some time. A fine image you have here - much more interesting than monks just sitting around. I think your colors are spot, but the sharpness may be a bit soft from low light or movement. best, c

Hi Bob,
I like the quiet mood of this image as the monks go about their work. Although this is an everyday chore, it seems that they are all engrossed in what they have to do. The neutral in the room work well with the orange colour of their robes.
Cheers Grant

Yoy' ve managed to capture beautiful scene .. far from typical buddist's monks portraits.. They are in movement, undertake everyday activity..
Colours are exceptionally charming.. there is some softness in the air which I particulary like.
Well done indeed!

hi bob
i love how this is composed. an everyday moment that these boys are probably used to, but something us westerners will probably never see for ourselves. the bowl placements here are especially pleasing. you've managed to capture a frank and very real story. great job

Lovely delicacy to this shot, Bob. One only needs to look closely to find this precision in the way the cups are detached from the whole in the foreground, the boy monks fading ever so gently into an OOF zone. Super shot!

Great one Bob, I really like the soft light.
Every novices are occupied in a different way, very nice to look at their activities.
Softness gives a special atmosphere for me, very peaceful.

From the thumbnail my first comment was going to be about white balance, but when I look at the larger image its clear that the plate in the center is white, so no problems on that front I believe if you like orange ;)
For me the best part about this one is your viewpoint. Rather than (actually or metaphorically) looking down on the scene you took a lower viewpoint. That engages the viewer more in the scene and is simple yet effective. As a piece of reportage it works very well, but as a piece of art (should we ever call ourselves artists) I'd like a less 'busy' scene where my eye can fall more easily on a stronger subject. One approach would be to capture the scene where all subjects are looking toward the center rather than out of the image. Another idea would be to pick one of the monks and work on a shallower DOF to give him more prominence.

I spent a long time looking at this shot. I cannot decide if I prefer it 'soft' or if I'd have preferred it sharper! :) It's an excellent comp though. It is very rare to see monks engaging in daily activity. I think it would have been a little better if you had taken a step or two to the right. For me that would be a more pleasing angle. The note is very interesting as well! Rgds.
