Photographer’s Note
Taken in a small village nearby the small town on Muangsing I was fortunate enough to have a Japanese guide who showed me around the village and allowed me to hold some basic conversation with the Laos people.
This was the first of two villages I visited in Muangsing (with just one night in the town) and the young children were very apprehensive at first. Hopefully I'll get some shots of these kids up later, but for the meantime I think this old woman really goes a long way to explain the apprehension.
For the whole duration of our stay (there were five of us, two of us with cameras) this woman sat and stared eagle-eyed at us from her raised hut. A real stubborn character if I ever saw one!
Shot in colour with the intention of switching to black and white. I'm no expert on converting colour to B&W but I'm happy with this shot. I love the contrast as well as the over-exposure on the wood at the bottom of the shot.
PP included adjusting the usual RAW settings then desaturating before playing heavily with saturation and finally running a fairly aggressive unsharp mask.
I am especially interested in feedback on my B&W conversion process. I've seen tutorials on the Internet but want to know what people think to what I've done here and how it might have been done better.

Hi Lewis,
Great portrait. i think that this image needs some sharpness at first. I like that all the attention isn't on the face which is dramatically interesting by herself but on the hand. I think You can do better cropping (the top of picturewhich is too dark is not necessary and 2-3 cm. from the left side) but it is only my opinion. Best regards. maki

Very Interesting shot here. Its different, which makes it stand out (even in thumbnail).
unfortunetly I know nothing of the finer points of converting from colour to B&W, but what I do like is how the shot is slightly flawed (almost as if it was taken with a toy camera, e.g. holga / lomo) giving it an artistic / antique quality. The image carries almost a timeless quality both in its subject and execution.
Your description of Mueng Sing is also pretty good (I visited there myself two years ago) - I wonder how much it has changed, considering how quick the pace of change is now in Laos.
