Photographer’s Note

This was taken at Wat Xieng Thong in Luang Prabang, Laos. It is a beautifully ornate and colorful temple which sits on a large property just overlooking the Mekong River. In addition to the large namesake temple, there are many smaller temples. One of the most photographed is a pink temple with rich cobalt tile mosaics.

This was taken inside one of the smaller temples. The reverence of the scene gave me an awe-inspiring sense of just how much peace and devotion the Buddhist culture embodies.

This one temple in particular struck me because of the meticulous ornamentation and gifts that had been left on the alter. The contrast between the complimentary colors, the blue against the gold, also caught my eye. I also liked the sense that one Buddha was standing over the other, almost blessing it in a sense

This was taken with my little pocket camera. I hadn't really gone out to shoot anything, but came across this temple and decided to enter and check it out. Since I always have my pocket camera with me, this is one photo I snapped while I was there.

Surprisingly, the picture came out very sharp considering the slow 1/8th shudder speed, but that's one advantage of the ultrawide angle lenses of pocket digitals. The zoom lens on this little camera has a focal length range of 5.4-10.8mm (equivalent to 35-70mm on a 35mm camera).
