I stood there...still not believing what I saw. I read about this in the internet. Over a hundred monks rounded the streets of Luang Prabang,so it said, but being there and experiencing that unfolding before your eyes is another story.
Many months back, I posted a picture of monks feet. This picture was from that same day. I zeroed in on these receptacles. A work of art themselves. And the way they held on to it was also interesting. Before long, these containers would be filled up with sticky rice offering. Before long, my eyes would be filled up with amazing episodes of this parade. Before long...

Superb PoV and framing, making the most of the repitition here. I like the crop you've chosen here.
sunny (3068) 2005-02-26 12:19
Love the tight framing here, Manny! :-) It really is striking and accentuates in a wonderful way on what monks carry and on their hands. The repetition of details increases the fantastic effect and creates a very special atmosphere. Excellent!
naxius (16685) 2005-02-26 12:27
Superb Manny. I like the rich colors, very contrasted, sharp and neat.
This is excellent. The composition is graphic.
I like the way you have managed a kind of diagonal made by the monks and their arms.
Did you used any kind of pp? like neatimage or somethink like that?
AmiBe (6042) 2005-02-26 12:31

Hi Manny. I think this is among of your best publishings so far - the multiple repetitive details provide a rhythmic quality to the photo that was just so well spotted. Great use of DOF, very appealing colors, and a good compositional diagonal. Great stuff.
bantonbuju (51781) 2005-02-26 16:01
what a cropping! this is a real art, manuel; unforgettable photo, one of my favorites;

great DOF and colours, Manuel!
Their feet and arms sort of haloing vivid colours of their clothes.
What a festival!
Praetzer (1789) 2005-02-26 17:36
Pictures like this make me always wonder where to put the focus and with what DOF?
I see that you resolved the puzzle.
erdna (5711) 2005-02-26 19:25
I like your depth of field, focusing on one hand and one receptacle. What I do not like, (not at all your fault) is the exposed metal cap. It just does not go with the embroidered like finery of the rceptacle cover.
alford (3981) 2005-02-27 0:43
Hi Manny! You really see things in a different but beautiful way. I'm amazed at how you composed this shot. Did you take a full body shot, then decided to crop out their faces and lower body?
I agree with the others' comments, this is a very artistic and creative photo. Your use of fine DOF is again well presented. The red colors have a big impact! Thanks for sharing! rgds.
everlasting (14694) 2005-02-27 2:13
I was also lucky enough to witness this last summer. You see many photos of the procession focussing on the line of monks but this is original. The colours, the lines, the DOF, and the framing. Going into my favourites at once.
naret (826) 2005-02-27 3:19
By breaking the normal style, you make an interesting photo here.
Amandine (1072) 2005-02-27 5:12

Great shot Manny. The colors are incredibly powerful!! I like your focus in the hand, but your perspective also allows to have a very good idea of the surroundings.
Rinie_Hoff (9340) 2005-02-27 12:36
Hi Manny, long time, no see. I sometimes lack time for TE, so do you, I understand.
Beautiful capture thiw way, Manny. Those young, bare arms are so beautiful in the shot. I like that one foot, stretched upwards for a step. It really must be impressive to see this.
Love;y colours, Manny, Im' glad you come up with a picture every now and then!
maphoto (8082) 2005-02-27 18:53

eflowers (674) 2005-02-28 4:37
stunning photo, manny. beautiful colors, beautiful composition. the only thing i find a tiny bit distracting is the bit of arm on the right.

alvaraalto (6177) 2005-03-01 7:57
Very good composition. And that rich gamut of yellow and orange colours are marvellous.
I think I would have cropped the last arm on the right.
Pattyjy (2180) 2005-03-01 9:15
Oh Manuel, quelle belle photographie. Les couleurs sont superbes ainsi que la profondeur de champ. J'adore. Amitié, Patty.
sn00zie (2384) 2005-03-01 9:15
the net covering the receptables is quite interesting. i like the symmetry and the repititive pattern in this picture. the colors are superb and the depth-perfect.
Luko (13998) 2005-03-07 8:33
Excellent shot, this is again a proof there are many meaningful images we can take without showing faces. (I also tried the same one as yours but didn't uploaded it here as I already showed a tight alms shot).
Very little to nitpick, except perhaps about the overall white balance which is IMHO tending towards green. If you look closely the skin color is somehow ill balanced : I suspect you used the auto white balance, your camera corrected the overflow of orangy warm color by shifting tones towards green. This is something you can easily correct by fiddling the white balance simulations, specially if you keep the RAW files.
As for myself I always switch to "sunny" white balance, sometimes to "cloudy" in order to keep a warm balance. I don't like the camera to decide for myself.
ash_parikh (2266) 2005-03-11 1:25
Very nice photo, nice use of shallow DOF. The composition and the colours are brilliant.
MoosicMan (1231) 2005-03-30 6:24
Manuel, one of your very best. The soft colors, the sharpness, the somewhat shallow DOF, and the natural contrast, all excellent. Very, very nice work here.
toddadams (575) 2005-04-23 10:36
Innovative in its point of view and composition. The colors really stand out and contrast nicely with the subdued skin tones. My eye is also drawn to the repeating pattern of the arms and bowls.
