These were some of the local boys from Don Det in the south of Laos. They would come over to play and watch us do our stupid foreigner tricks (a few of us spun firestaffs and poi--you see heaps of this sort of thing on Thai beaches, but aren't yet the norm in Laos [see: Playing with Fire]). The kid holding my practice staff (front right) would try once and awhile and he was pretty good (ie. he didn't hit himself in the head as much as expected :-)
Post-pro (this was taken as a low res shot so some pixelation is evident, part of my post pro was to try to work around this limitation): converted to b/w, curves, noise added, blur layer +1.5, 20% opacity.

Wonderful faces, Alex! Your choice of B/W has impact and a photojournalistic look. I like it in spite of the fact that the two boys in the back look pasted-on.

When I first looked at this photo, the first thing that came to mind was Manny (Manuel Librodo)! I honestly thought it was one of his pics!
What I really like about the photo os how the kids in the back are peeking, trying to see what is going on! I only wish that you hadn't cropped out the boy on the right's ear.

Great title and great faces. I like the way the pole and the arm set off the main subject from the other three boys. B & W works very nicely here. As you noted, it's a little grainy, but that doesn't really bother me too much here.

how I like such scenes. dense composition, tight framing, lovely kids... the only wish is to see the whole face of the kid in the upper left corner completely... anyway, it is a very nice picture.

Cute kids! I woudn't worry abt the 'look' of it - it just looks like a rather grainy b+w film photo.

The way you got those four little faces in the frame is great. I like the two in the back they look so right to me. The child on the left, bottom makes the picture for me with his face a bit slobbery. I wish you had not cropped so tightly and on the right. These children are precious you captured them beautifully.

Very good portrait with much expressivness in all the kids eyes. I like a lot the crowded composition filled with faces.
Also good BW and noise.

Great capture Alex. Good title too! I just love that bit cross-eyed boy at the front. Good close-up, well done! (points tomorrow!)

I do love the boys' face. Lovely eyes. You play with PS so well when you do desalutation and and more noise, they make the picture so old.

having fun going thru the TE archives.
Nice one Alex, of course the kids are something to behold, especially the one on the left, such a nice smile, but the way you took the shot added dynamic, with one kid in the foreground forward with a sure grip on the staff, and the smiling onetilting his head in a different direction than the other.

Hello Alex. This is really atmospherick image. In eyes boys I see half / half : carefree / antagonism. It's true, them eyes like said: be careful this is our neighbourhood. Great compo, esspecially I like hand with of course "so expensive" jewellery. congratulations. good luck

I love the faces, the close cropping, and the b&w. Like fotofreak, my reaction to the thumbnail was, "This has got to be by Manny!" At a closer look I think it is a bit less sharp than something by Manny, and maybe this shot could use a bit more contrast. But overall great job!
