This is Luang Prabang morning market- it's a very local's only street market pops up hidden in the alleys on the west of Sisavangvong Rd in the south of the Royal Palace. It's a typical passing spot for Laotians who come to buy and/or to sell and hardly any tourists here when I arrived in a cool slight greyish morning and there’s a lot going on! Some vendors sell at tables, but most use bamboo mats and sheets on the sidewalk; business is conducted at a crouch. What I love about this market is the absolutely amazing array of fresh produce on sale; from fruit and veg, fish, chicken, beef, noodles and strange looking Mekong fish as well as spices and all sorts of leaves and plants which are used to make the traditional dishes.
But the most shocking items on sale are the wide range of 'exotic' unusual foodstuff such as roasted rats & rodents, dogs & bats, sparrows, serpents, buffalo skin, living wildlife and some strange looking insects which I cant even name or recognise etc.. etc... Respectful to local culture goes a long way, they are used to that and not everyone of them likes it but it's their way of living and it's all part of life's rich tapestry.
It’s very authentic market, wonderfully colourful and great for few shots of a cheerful place in this relaxed town. Hectic like all Asian markets and yet surprisingly very calm at slow pace. By noon the market has vanished—all that's left are a handful of tomatoes and eggplants that have rolled away.
It makes my journal worth!!!
WS1 "Yummy - mouth watering"
WS2: "Amazing - food glorious food "

the best street markets are the hidden ones the tourists don't know about. i don't think i could stomach the 'exotic' foodstuffs, but nice to hear that people respect local culture.
the pov really gives a sense of being there and once again you have given us not only a feast in terms of food, but also a feast for the eyes with your wonderful sense of color.
your note is beautifully written, giving a real sense of the people and the place, as well as your appreciation for what you so poetically call "life's rich tapestry" :)

A nice colorful market scene with perfect pov. The feel is excellent with the buyers and rows of sellers. The WS photos are really interesting, but I wonder how the Amazing-glorious-mouthwatering food will react in my stomach. Your vivid note is as enjoyable as your photo.
Thanks for sharing.

I like these market scenes a lot, so colourful and interesting. It tells so much about how people live. I like the vibrant colours and the sense of life this picture has. The eye is drawn by this fine array of freshly picked fruit and vegetables, but I'm so disappointed not to see the "exotic unusual foodstuff" you mentioned in your note ! A slice of daily life well captured.

a very colorful view, so many vitamins:) Love places like that, you can always find some tasty mangoes and papayas there... The picture gives a good idea of the local life and is shot from a very nice angle.
Thanks for sharing and my best wishes!

LIfe rich tapestry, a great phrase to go with this picture of this busy marketplace, the sense of depth you created with this angle is excellent and shows so well the amount of people hear selling what sounds like everything imaginable! The color that the food brings into the scene is really wonderful. Fantastic workshop too, I have never seen cooked bats before, so once again Trekearth shows me a first! I wonder what they taste like....
Have a great day

great scene - busy and colorful and very very interesting. I enjoy examining the market offer step by step :-)
The POV you chose seems to be truly ideal one and the whole composition has very good depth and perspective.

Watching the local markets is always fun, trying to take good pictures can be a nice challenge. From this POV we see two fine rows of very simple street stalls packed with interesting and colourful items. At this distance it's not easy to identify what is offered, and maybe that's an advantage. The workshops are interesting but I can't even then say exactly what they show, and I'm not sure that I really want to know :-).

You're capturing well this morning market by a good angle, a good perspective and excellent tone/clarity, so it's interesting and impressive to see the spectacle in which many village people are selling fresh vegetables, fruits etc., in a line on mats at a roadside. It seems to one of the spectacles peculiar to Asia with a feeling of a life.

Lovely colorful market scene. You have very well portrayed the 'life' in the market which I miss so much in departmental stores. Fantastic daily life scene with these row of sellers with their colorful merchandise. I like it a lot. Your WS photos are interesting as well. I have seen many such stuff in the Indian states of Nagaland and Mizoram. I do not find them repulsive, many people eat many things in our huge world. You never know some people may cringe at what we eat! Thanks for sharing an unique market.

A nicely composed picture with a long diagonal of colourful wares here. Also highly interesting note and workshop pictures. I have never tried roasted rats or bats but I have many times enjoyed a very odd Norwegian speciality that you can read about here. This is definitely very good!

Those tropical fruits and vegetables looks very delicious! That's one thing I miss about the Philippines is the availability of fruits just off the trees. Good documentation of the daily of people. Good pov and nice details with wonderful colors. Well done, tfs.

A stunning composition, a great perspective of this POV, with dramatic colorful items that give both sales markup, as the selling clothes, all these people gives a great vitality to the image. A great scene full of color and quaintness of the East.
Good brightness and sharpness, with a nice range of colors.
Well seen and done better. I Like. Great note also as usual.
Have a good day.

you bring me back in Laos five years ago when i strolled in this open air street market in Luang Prabang with the natives to spread their merchandises and waiting to sell themm.
During the night the open air market get full with ventors selling clothes, bads and so on. Excellent the creative perspective as the beauty of the scene.

A nice DL photo with great colors and contrast.well sharpped image, the details are well observed.

a very colourful and vivid marketplace, I appreciate this wide view of the fruit and vegetables section (the contents of the workshop pictures are fascinating and appalling at the same time:) In this photo, I like very much how the rich, bright colours stand out amid the neutral, moody tones. You've set up this scene very skillfully, enhancing the dynamism and depth of the setting. The colourful produce and the people converge effectively towards the busy background at the top of the frame. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a great day,

Beautiful colorful market scene. Thank you for the "bon appétit" but I don't really like the proposed menu in WS! :)

I almost suffer a heart attack watching the WS, was waiting some, as you said, mouth watering dishes , ugg
I compare the calm ambience here with the crying one at the chinese street markets, you are right everybody seams relazed, I would buy a banana to continue walking along this so colorful market, love them
A good capture plenty of local color, my prefered ones
Very well done, tfs and congrats, meaning it

I always adore reading your note...they are personalised and border on the poetic...in fact they are quite often poetic. I remember walking this evry street one morning in LP 8 years ago & also remember seeing the food you showed us in the WSs. I also remember that we were told not to take pictures...so we didn't..
Memories come rushing in...thanks to you for that!
