A quick shot taken in Luang Prabang, there's still not a ray of sunshine when i had a very early start to a really cold grey foggy morning as I headed towards Mekong River bank in pursuit of capturing some images, hopefully sunrise at the boat station. Came across this scene greeted by the lone strolling monk in the mist and obviously he became my prime target when I swung my trusty multi purpose 18-70mm around and grabbed this shot, using smallest f-number possible for maximum depth of field.
I simply love the peaceful feeling this gave me i thought enough to bag the mood into the shot and the result was just what I wanted to show here while trying to record the scene and maintain everything in the elements as what i shot in camera.

interesting effect with this contrast between the gey and this coloured people, well made.
CLODO (34196) 2013-12-19 8:43
what a grey mood well enhanced by the orange cloth of the monk walking on the road, but we can look at the road vehicules in the fog.

Sometimes the worst weather is the photographers best friend. This is absolutely brilliant! The composition is great, but I would probably crop it a bit on the left hand side, but that´s a matter of taste. I love it!
claudeD (38708) 2013-12-19 9:03
very fine picture from Laos showing his early morning scenery without real colors only black and white. The man in red gives really a very fine touch of color to your shot. Very well done.TFS.
With regards from Luxembourg

As my guru in photography used to say..the photo has climate. Your photo has it too. I love how you have got this shot in monochrome almost because of the foggy weather. That emphasizes the importance of good light in photography as well. The monk in saffron colors easily catches the eye and is a good focal point. Nice moody shot, thanks for sharing.

Bravo, splendid !
You dared to shoot in these apparently awful light situation and you've been right
A successful moody shot thanks to the mist and to the orange robe of the monk that really stands out (and at the right place) in all the grayness
Bravo, all the best

The monk is very welcome here with his orange rope.
Good health and good luck for Pak in tahun baru!

This is a fabulously atmospheric image with the red robe standing out against the grey tones. Very well composed and lovely to see.
Kind Regards, Ann

this picture is captivating. It has a very interesting theme, a view at a place that's not easily reached, at an hour few people know. You have captured the scene superbly with so much detail in the mist. The monk stands out so attractively and the environment around him makes such an intriguing and atmospheric context. Your light management is amazing, there are several layers of mild grey tones that reflect a mysterious and intimate mood. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a great day,

Une atmosphère mystérieuse du petit matin, bien rendu, bon POV, et animations sur la route, bonne présence de la personne en orange qui attire le regard, belle réalisation

Hello Abmdsudi. Very nice contrast between the monk and the foggy environment. Well exploited "unfavourable light" for sure! A very enjoyable atmospheric photo. I think it would have worked also very well in a squarish format, i.e. if cutting some 20% or so of the left hand side where not much is happening, but I know that would not be your style! Best regards, Claude.
papagolf21 (101930) 2013-12-19 11:43
Bonsoir, cher Abmdsudi,
Une image ravissante et très joliment présentée comme à l'accoutumée.
C'est beau, c'est très réussi.
Très bonne soirée.

I love foggy images, there's always a special atmosphere about them. But for a moment I thought it was smoke from some fire nearby... It must be the lady in those bright orange clothes that triggered such thinking:)
Lovely early hours image, I miss that humid Asian feel.
Thanks and best wishes!

In the past few years, I have seen way too many fotos in the advertising and promotions media that utilize the cheap software trick of presenting the image in monochrome, but for one element that retains its color. It was interesting the first three times, now it tells me there is a lazy intern in the ad agency.
But here, you have accomplished what each of those failed efforts was trying to accomplish -- a sense of dramatic uncertainty, punctuated by the bold color of the monk's robe. Just so I am not misunderstood, let me say that I know this is not a software trick, but is the scene faithfully captured and represented -- a misty morning of dim light barely sufficient for vision (let alone photography!), in which we see the strong color of the monk. And there, perhaps, is the philosophical theme of this image. I love it!
lousat (91348) 2013-12-19 14:50
Another magic atmosphere in a beautiful moment, you're great to cuaght these opportunities! It looks like a black and white with only a orange silhouette inside,a natural peinture made in a spectacular style,i like it! Have a nice day and thanks,Luciano
KristinsCamera (2384) 2013-12-19 21:36
i love that you get up early enough in the mornings to capture mystic scenes like this so i can enjoy them after the sun has risen and i have a cup of coffee in hand :)
you are such a genius at capturing these evocative yet ordinary moments, the misty palette of sombre tones with just a brush of orange. another example of your amazing knack for photographic poetry... thank you ~
kato (11630) 2013-12-19 21:54
You're capturing well this daily shot by a good composition, partial color and excellent tone/clarity, so it's interesting and impressive to see the road and its surroundings with the foggy air in the early morning. It's also impressive in trees which hang down on straight road and some residents on road. And, a monk who wears the orange shoulder-worn ornamental robe and walking the road draws out a good impact.

Une magnifique photo à l'atmosphère très particulière, superbement composée en exploitant de belle façon les habits oranges du moine.
mirosu (16227) 2013-12-20 0:53
You've done a great job with the composition and diffuse light control. There's excellent depth, the picture is very rich in interesting details, the colors and the foggy atmosphere are very appealing. The man in colorful dress is a very good and effective idea. Well done.
rigoletto (34279) 2013-12-20 1:08
hello abmdsudi. this is what i call "atmosphere in photography". mists are really giving, when it comes to atmosphere creation and you almost had a photo with b&w taste with mysterious depth, were it not for the walking monk. splendid!
Noel_Byrne (31130) 2013-12-20 1:13
While I dont have much experience of shooting in the early mists, I have seen from TE that it can offer some amazing conditions, and the fact that this orange robed monk entered your frame at this time has made for a most interesting composition. He is like a burst of sunlight in his own right as he breaks the grey tones of the whole scene. Brilliantly spotted, and well done for getting the shot. I tend to miss moments like this :)
All the best
holmertz (52722) 2013-12-20 3:12
This was indeed a dark morning and I had to look carefully to find other hints of colours than the monk's saffron robe. I can just barely make out some green tones among the trees and bushes. This is like a day in winter in the far north. The darkness and the morning mist have created a fabulous, mysterious atmosphere and the monk adds a large pinch of exotism.
Didi (60588) 2013-12-20 4:01
Interesting scene on the hard fog with a nice touch of red
Well done for the lights control
Best regards and Meryy Christmas

Looks very unusual weather condition for that part of the world but I like the effect of the mist on the mood. Good technical qualities and good lighting control. Very well done, tfs.

An interesting picture with all these soft grey parts and an eye-catching red-dressed person that really makes a statement in the picture. Well seen!
adramad (45600) 2013-12-20 10:21
A stunning image that has a certain air of mystery with this mist, silhouetting the shapes of trees and people passing by the street, the person in the foreground which I guess is a monk, by the color of their clothes, chromatic gives a nice touch.
Well seen and done better.
Good job.I like.
Enjoy a good weekend.
Romano46 (18472) 2013-12-20 10:46
molto bella l'atmosfera nebbiosa che smorza tutti i colori lasciando alla tunica arancio del monaco di emergere e diventare la protagonista della composizione.
Un ottimo soggetto ripreso in condizioni di luce critiche, ma in maniera eccellente.
Ciao e buon fine settimana

Ciao Abmdsudi, fascinating misty composition with lovely walking people, excellent perspective, wonderful colors and splendid light, very well done, my friend, have a good week end, ciao Silvio
delpeoples (58068) 2013-12-20 22:17
This is something different from your Gallery. Usually we see sunny or well lit sunrises/sunsets, or colourfully defined people. Here the colours and light are far more subtle, but just as enchanting. I love how the man dressed in orange emerges from the mist, thus creating a sense of mystery aswell as the tranquillity you speak of in your note.
Well done, thanks for sharing, the early start was worth it!
daddo (26788) 2013-12-21 3:13
At least the monk is in no danger of being run over in the thick mist. Nice moody shot with the mysterious shapes of looming trees and palms. An intimate and quiet moment. Salam Abmdsudi.
krzychu30 (15512) 2013-12-22 6:54
seems like you were in the right time at the right place.
The misty scene, which is so moody and kind of mysterious and the lonely monk standing out so nicely from the surrounding.
Beautiful,evocative and very artistic composition!
adores (45337) 2013-12-23 18:26
It was really foggy and I like the atmosphere you capture here! The monk in foreground stands out perfectly. A good capture and different from what we usually see from Laos!
aleXundar (1256) 2013-12-24 2:25
Really foggy it is... eaten up colors from all the objects and created a dreamy atmosphere. And how truly this photo represents that - with the inclusion of saffron of the monk. Wonderful atmosphere created with your great light management as usual.
With warm regards,
Waylim (25502) 2013-12-26 10:53
A very poetic iamge and a typical scene at the beginning of the day, the air is crispe and misty. and withing the misty air, you see the grow of orange and it get brighter and than the shape of a monk or monks appear at the end of the street...That is one of the think I missed about home. The morning ritual. This depict it very well. A beautiful shot and good quality consider the difficult light condition.
Wanda1 (15142) 2013-12-29 0:05
The monk in his orange robes jumps out of the misty grey scene. There is indeed a tranquil feeling and the mist lends a nice atmosphere to the image.
Best wishes for 2014!
Angshu (56758) 2013-12-31 1:04
The orange robe is really a cause of cheer..photographically! The mood created by the mist has been well captured. The mist & fog is not unusual a phenonmenon in the winter, we faced it as well. A stand-out shot indeed!
Wishing you & all your loved ones a fine, prosperous & healthy 2014
